It’s hard to keep a secret from George Worrall. He and his wife, Nancy of 68 years are early risers and until the pandemic closed everything down were morning regulars at McDermott Pool.
That doesn’t mean George has given up exercise. Walking has replaced swimming and when he left his home for the past 65 years on Torrington Drive early Wednesday morning there was no way he could miss the birthday lawn sign his friend John Rooney erected under the cover of darkness the night before.
So the surprise 90th birthday celebration planned for 8 a.m. Wednesday morning was not a surprise, but it was a party. His daughter Marcia Blazar crowned him. Her son, Joseph, read how his grandparents raised five children from the Torrington Drive home where George made sure they have the greenest grass in the neighborhood. Family including children, grandchildren and at least one of three great grandchildren – all appropriately spaced – sang happy birthday as “King George” looked on. They it was time for some coffee, donuts and fruit before many had to leave for work.
