Anne Diffily is one of three who have maintained the traffic island at Oakland Beach Avenue and West Rhode Road for the past two years. She said she does it to create a favorable impression of the Beach; as a welcoming feature and because, “I love gardening and run out of room at home.” Until the city installed a water line, she said one of the backbreaking parts of the job was lugging buckets of water to the site. Anne was working on the island on Labor Day putting in fall plantings and planting bulbs for the spring display. Anne, Jason Newman and Jerry McLaughlin, members of the Oakland Beach Association that adopted the island, also maintain the site. (Warwick Beacon photo)
