With the exception of six schools still undergoing renovations or in the case of Sherman School being cleaned of mold, it was back to class for Warwick students yesterday. Mayor Frank Picozzi who was joined by School Committee Chair Judy Cobden, Superintendent Lynn Dambruch and Assistant Superintendent William McCaffrey made Hoxsie School his first stop of the day. The first classroom they visited was kindergarten where the mayor’s grandson, Benjamin Kirchner, was getting settled in. Dambruch said all elementary schools would have a full time math intervention teacher this year. All schools are providing free breakfasts and lunches to all students, McCaffrey said. Hoxsie Principal Gary McCoombs was pleased with the opening, observing despite the excitement and occasional confusion that accompanies opening day, classes were only five minutes shy from starting at 8:30. Schools not opening yesterday will open Monday and will close later at the end of the academic year to make up for lost days.
