Salinas, Patten take home titles

Hawks finish 2nd as team

The Rhode Island Inteerscholastic League held its wrestling state championships last weekend and plenty of local grapplers made nosie on the big stage.

Leading the way were Warwick wrestlers Victoria Salinas and Allison Patten, who won their second state titles on the girls side after also winning in last year’s inaugural event.

Patten, a sophomore at Pilgrim, won the 107-pound championship and received the Outstanding Wrestler Award for her performance as she pinned her final opponent in less than a minute.

Salinas, a Toll Gate senior, moved down in weight this season to claim her second championship, finishing her high school career on top.

“It was super rewarding. I felt super rewarded for myself and my coaches. It was amazing. I felt a lot more confident because when I dropped weight, it made me feel more confident in my field and my skills. I felt more prepared,” said Salinas. “All my nervousness died down. I was able to see and understand and grasp how chaotic things were. It was the best feeling ever leaving this year with a title, being with this school, it was a great feeling.”

Salinas was also proud to help usher in a new generation of female wrestlers, with the tournament nearly doubling in participants from last year’s event.

“I’ve met so many amazing and talented girls this year, so many friends. Even my opponents. It’s an uplifting experience to find a community in wrestling and to see so many amazing women there,” Salinas said.

The two will now be competing at this weekend’s New England Championships.

On the boys side, Ponaganset wrapped up the team championship while Bishop Hendricken finished second.

Hendricken’s Mikhail Hulkow finished second at 120 pounds while teammate Logan Ross took second at 157 pounds. Toll Gate’s Marcos Ramirez placed second at 126 pounds, while Hendricken’s Matthew Pappas placed second at 165. Gianni Santo took second at 175 pounds for Hendricken as well.

Hendricken’s Michael Quinn took third at 113, while Johnston’s Logan Martins placed third at 132 pounds for the Panthers. Hendricken’s Seth McGrew took third at 144 pounds and teammate Lincoln Tiernan finished third at 190.

Hendricken’s Vincent McAteer took fourth at 215 pounds. Michael Owens finished fifth at 106 pounds for Hendricken and Cranston West’s Dylan Bowry took fifth at 126 pounds. West’s Benjamin Jawharjian placed fifth at 132 pounds. Kason Wirtz finished fifth at 150 pounds for Toll Gate.

Gian Richardson reached the podium by placing sixth at 190 pounds for West.

Mila Dy took second at 114 pounds for Cranston East and West’s Giana Espinal Albizu took third at 107 as well.
