Senior fitness classes expanded at Pilgrim Senior Center

Mayor Joseph J. Solomon announced on Wednesday he is expanding on-demand virtual fitness classes for seniors. “I know this has been such a difficult time for so many people; with seniors being particularly vulnerable, many folks been able to get out much and may be feeling isolated,” stated Mayor Solomon in a press release. “The fitness classes at the Pilgrim Senior Center have always been very popular, but due to the pandemic we’ve had to pause in-person programming. Unfortunately, COVID cases are continuing to spike, which means the safety precautions we have in place are likely to remain for the time being.”

Mayor Solomon also reminds those eligible for Medicare, the federal government’s health insurance for people over age 65 and those under age 65 with a long-term disability, that open enrollment runs until Dec. 7. During open enrollment, those eligible or currently on Medicare may add or change coverage related to an Advantage Plan (Medicare Part C) and prescription drugs (Part D). People may switch or add those parts of their coverage. “Even for people who are already on Medicare, it’s a good idea to review your coverage to make sure you’re using the most cost-effective options. Our staff at the Pilgrim Senior Center is here to help, as always, and you can make an appointment with the social service team to review your options,” Mayor Solomon said.

The Mayor noted that other services have been and continue to be available for seniors since the pandemic forced the closure of the Center. A “grab-and-go” lunch program has been offered on weekdays, and meals have been delivered on a regular basis to seniors who are homebound or otherwise unable to pick up their lunches. Wellness calls are being made daily throughout the week, and the community nurse and center staff have been available to answer questions or provide assistance via phone or email to seniors.

For seniors who aren’t comfortable with technology, Mayor Solomon reminds everyone that free one-on-one technology assistance is available through the City’s partnership with URI’s Cyber Senior Program. Seniors can schedule one-on-one telephone appointments for assistance with any technology questions, including Zoom. Appointments can be booked by calling Senior Center Program Manager Kathleen Bohl at (401) 468-4074.  More information is online at https://www.warwickri.gov/senior-services-pilgrim-senior-center/webforms/cyber-seniors.
