A pair of Pilgrim Patriots made their college decisions official last week, as Gillian Brown committed to playing soccer for Division II Assumption University and Ian Bubar signed to run cross country for Division II Stonehill.

Brown was an all-division player for Pilgrim and finished her high school career with 47 goals and 29 assists. She was also a team captain during her time while competing in softball as well.

Brown knew early on that she would pursue soccer at the next level and is looking forward to representing Pilgrim, who has seen multiple players reach the collegiate level in the past few years.

“I visited the school and the team and everyone was super nice. I chose soccer just before my freshman year, I just loved soccer more than softball. The biggest thing I’m going to be focusing on is my speed because the skill level in Division II is going to be far more advanced. It was a very big achievement for me and the girls that have (played college soccer) from here are very talented, so I am very proud to add my name to that list,” said Brown.

Pilgrim coach Tom Flanders was present as she signed her National Letter of Intent and believes that her intangibles will help her find success as a Greyhound.

“We knew very early that there would be a signing day. The energy she brought every single day, the smile she brought every single day, the technical ability. As she got older, the tactical awareness and ability. These are the things that are going to benefit her at the next level. I knew this day would come when she would play in college. She’s been a captain and a tremendous leader for our program, and certainly an example for our younger players,” said Flanders.

Bubar was Pilgrim’s leading runner this past fall season and was sold on Stonehill early in the process.

“The team was very welcoming. I visited twice but knew the first time that I wanted to be there, it took me off my feet,” said Bubar, who is excited to get to know the Stonehill team. “I’m looking forward to joining a college team and meeting a new group of guys. I’m excited to join a new family, kind of like one I have here.”

Pilgrim cross country coach Scott Bayha also believes that his leadership will help him earn the respect of his teammates.

“He’s a great kid, he’s a leader, he’s somebody that if you’re hanging off that cliff, he’s going to throw his hand over for you and pick you up,” said Bayha. “Stonehill’s getting a leader, a teammate, and a guy that’s going to give it his all every day.”
