Warwick artist Sophia Hopkins place first in the annual Chalk the Block contest sponsored by the East Greenwich Chamber of Commerce.

The event was held on July 15, and featured artists aged 7 and older.

Contestants entered the competition for $25, and received a t-shirt and a set of chalk, although Hopkins admits that she brought her own. Artists were given three hours to create their illustrations.

Awards were given to artists who placed first and second in age categories ranging from 7 years old to 16 and over. There was also a family category, in which family members could team up to create a chalk masterpiece.

The Brown University freshman may be studying biology, but Hopkins has always had a love of art.

“Art is my main hobby,” she said in a brief interview on Monday. “I do a lot of crafts, mostly acrylic paintings for family or friends as gifts or for local art shows.”

Hopkins likes to paint Rhode Island scenery, as well as portraits of both people and pets.

For the Chalk the Block event, Hopkins chose an iconic Rhode Island landmark: the Towers at Narragansett Pier.

“I do a lot of Rhode Island themed things, that’s why I went with the Rhode Island scenery. It’s something iconic that people would recognize, and I place I’ve been to a billion times,” she said.

This is Hopkins’ third year entering and placing in the Chalk the Block contest. In 2018, she placed first for her chalk drawing of Roger Williams Park, and in 2019, she placed second for her drawing of Waterfire. She chose to continue her Rhode Island landmarks theme for the 2021 competition.

“It was really hot,” she said of the event, “but I was having a really good time. It’s so relaxing for me to just sit there and draw, and only focus on what I’m making in front of me.”

Hopkins won gift certificates to shops and restaurants on Main Street.

The artist graduated from La Salle Academy and currently lives in Warwick with her family.
