You heard them before you saw them. And then when they arrived they were little more than white streaks racing across the horizon and followed by the buzz of a helicopter keeping close tabs and snapping photos and video from above. It was the 18th annual Borden Light Marina Charity Poker Run held Saturday. The run where participants collect cards from different locations to make up a poker hand started about noon from the Braga Bridge in Fall River. Within a half hour the fleet of about 45 boats was racing up the Providence River to the East Providence Yacht Club – their first stop – before turning around to leave Conimicut Light (seen here) to their starboard on their way to Norton’s Marina in Greenwich Cove. Until last year the flotilla made a stop at Warwick Cove, but Harbormaster Jeff Barris put a stop to that, directing the “fun” raising nautical event to Norton’s, which is more accessible to Greenwich Bay. According to the BLM website, the event raised $62,000 that will go to Make-A-Wish Massachusetts and Rhode Island and The Tunnel to Towers Foundation. (Warwick Beacon photo)
