To the Editor,
A recent, and frequent, writer to these pages recently took swipes at “the Democrats” for “denial about the harm” in national Democratic policies. I am not a Democrat, but I find the writer’s generalities very weak rebuttals to the specifics provided by Mr. McKenney.
But there is one specific provided by the writer that is disturbing; he blames the tragic death of Laken Riley on Kamala Harris, quite personally, because the killer is “one of Kamala’s criminal aliens.”
To use that particular incident as any indication of the general state of affairs seems irresponsible and wrong; such incidents have certainly happened during dozens of administrations. As I write, border crossings are remarkably low. Further, this horrific incident is not indicative of the general state of affairs regarding immigrant criminality.
It is plain wrong to ban the immigrant due to criminality.
“National studies have examined incarceration rates and prosecutions of immigrants in the country, overwhelmingly finding that immigrants of all legal statuses commit crimes at lower rates than those who were born in the United States.” (Migration Policy Institute)
