Warwick Area Career & Technical Center to host six schools; public is invited

Student culinary teams from six high schools across Rhode Island will compete in the 2023 Rhode Island High School Seafood Cookoff, hosted by the Warwick Area Career & Technical Center, on Thursday, April 27, from 3 to 5:30 p.m., and the public is invited.

Teams will serve up their own original recipes for locally caught summer flounder. The audience will vote for their favorite dish, and the winning team will be treated to lunch and have their recipe featured at a Newport Restaurant group restaurant as a special.

The event is free to attend, but RSVPs are required. Please register online at https://bit.ly/3YHz3Tj

“Supporting the culinary arts and cooking skill development while celebrating our local fishermen is an honor from all of us at Newport Restaurant Group. We look forward to showcasing the winning team’s delicious recipe for our guests!” said Kevin DiLibero, Culinary Arts Director, Newport Restaurant Group.

The student teams come from the William M. Davies, Jr. Career and Technical High School; the East Providence High School Career and Technical Center; the Newport Area Career and Technical Center; the Warwick Area Career and Technical Center; the Westerly High School Career and Technical Program; and the Woonsocket Area Career and Technical Center.

“We know sometimes people are nervous about preparing seafood at home or trying different species. This cook-off is a great way for the guests be able to taste new dishes and get recipes for their favorites,” said Nicole Richard, University of Rhode Island and Rhode Island Sea Grant Seafood Safety Specialist. “And we appreciate the chance for future chefs to learn about preparing local sustainable seafood and hopefully bringing that knowledge into their careers.”

Sponsors of the 2023 Rhode Island Seafood Cookoff are the Warwick Area Career & Technical Center, Rhode Island Sea Grant, the Cooperative Extension Food Safety Education Program in the University of Rhode Island Department of Fisheries, Animal and Veterinary Sciences, Newport Restaurant Group, the Rhode Island Hospitality Association, and the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management.
