The announcement that the Rhythm and Roots Festival, scheduled for Labor Day weekend, has been canceled completes the list of all the arts and music festivals that we were looking forward to this summer.

As theatre groups and other arts and entertainment organizations struggle to survive, many have turned to the internet to offer unique programs, and in return seek donations.

WaterFire:  We will miss smelling the wood smoke from WaterFire, the most popular summertime activity in Rhode Island, an activity that has drawn thousands of visitors to our state and boosted our economy.

Visit waterfire.com, where every evening at 8:30 p.m. you can watch the Beacon of Hope from WaterFire headquarters, paying tribute to those who have lost their lives due to the coronavirus. Videos of past WaterFires and beautiful musical interludes are also presented, along with a number of special programs.

Gamm, Wilbury, Trinity, Epic, Mixed Magic: These theatre groups, and others, are providing many opportunities to keep us connected to the magical world of theatre. Most are offering tapes of past performances, live readings and lectures, and workshops. Google their names, sign on to their lists of updates and, if you can, financially support their efforts.

Music on the Hill and the RI Philharmonic: The Rhode Island Philharmonic and Music on the Hill are offering live and taped performances by many of their artists, in addition to lectures on classical music.

First Works and Festival Ballet: Live and taped dance performances can be enjoyed by company members and visiting international groups.

Artists are among the truly innovative people on earth, and they are working hard to bring the arts to you as they plan for a time, hopefully next season, when theatre, music, dance, and other performing arts will be live. Until then, enjoy what they are offering you and please support their efforts.
