The Warwick Vets girls basketball team finished its regular season with a perfect 14-0 record and the top seed in the upcoming RIPCOA Girls Basketball Playoffs.

The Hurricanes finished their season last week with another dominant performance, cruising past visiting De La Salle, 63-15. Armani Rivera and Amelia Polichetti led Vets with 18 points each in the win.

“It’s awesome, it gives us momentum heading into the playoffs. We are playing our best right now, and in these last two games we have been trying to do a few of the things that we have been working on and we have been successful. It’s beginning to show that it’s working, and they’re getting it in their heads that, ‘hey, we can do this,’” Vets coach Rich Hough said after the win.

The Hurricanes have been arguably the top shooting team in the state this winter, but relied on interior scoring against De La Salle.

“We wanted to work on the inside, we wanted to work with our centers. In the playoffs, you’re going to see better teams, so we’re going to have to be able to do that. If we can draw them to the inside that will open up shots for our shooters, help set up screens, and that’s what we wanted to work on today,” Hough said.

The season finale also marked the team’s annual eighth-grade game, where it honored its players that will be graduating to high school in the spring.

Hough has appreciated his eighth-graders’ hard work during their time in middle school and has seen a big jump in play over the past year.

“They’ve been huge, and I have seen monster improvement since last year. They weren’t quite at this level, but now they are, and I feel that we have two of the best players in the state in [Rivera] and [Polichetti]. They listen to what we want to do and they do what we want to do, they have all really bought in, especially when we hit 10-0,” Hough said.

The Hurricanes will host the winner of Cole and Gaudet in the first round of the playoffs this afternoon, and Hough is confident that his team will be ready to make some noise.

“Winning the division, going 14-0, that’s what they wanted to do and they couldn’t be any happier. They love it, they’re ready to roll,” said Hough. “This is the best team that I have coached, and I have coached for a long time. They listen, they’re prepared and they’re always ready to go. That is thanks to the youth program as well, they know from a young age that it is constant work. Now we are preparing them for the high school game. This entire program is in a great place.”
