DUI

Shortly after 12 a.m. on Dec. 25, officer Derek J. Hagopian and Bruce Law responded to the area of the Seasons Corner Market at 708 Greenwich Ave. for a report of an apparently intoxicated man who was attempting to drive away in his vehicle. The vehicle was described as a blue BMW bearing Massachusetts registration.

After arriving in the area of the market, Hagopian spotted the suspect vehicle stopped at a red light at the intersection of Main and Greenwich avenues. After the vehicle proceeded onto East Avenue, the officer initiated a motor vehicle stop.

Hagopian made contact with the operator and reports immediately detecting an odor of alcohol coming from inside the vehicle. The operator’s speech was “heavily slurred,” according to the officer.

The operator is said to have acknowledged consuming alcohol earlier that night and agreed to undergo field sobriety testing, which he reportedly failed.

Thanh N. Nguyen, 36, Brighton, Massachusetts, was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. While at headquarters, he is said to have refused a chemical breath test.

Nguyen was later transported to Kent Hospital for detox and issued a summons to appear in Third Division District Court on a charge of driving under the influence. He was additionally cited for refusal to submit to a chemical test.

At approximately 1:19 a.m. on Dec. 28, Officer Zachary J. Black responded to Kent Hospital to relieve another officer on a prisoner watch.

While en route, Black observed a red 2015 Kia pull into the marked “police only” entrance at Warwick Police headquarters. He then observed the vehicle back out of the entrance and proceed west on Veterans Memorial Drive. He followed the vehicle and observed it cross over the center line on two occasions.

Black initiated a motor vehicle stop and made contact with the operator, who is said to have acknowledged consuming alcohol that night. The officer additionally reports detecting an odor of alcohol on the operator’s breath.

The operator is said to have agreed to undergo field sobriety testing, which she reportedly failed.

Luz A. Jerez, 25, 80 1st Ave., Cranston, was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. While at headquarters, she is said to have refused a chemical breath test.

Jerez was later transported to Kent Hospital for detox and issued a summons to appear in Third Division District Court on a charge of driving under the influence. She was additionally cited for refusal to submit to a chemical test and laned roadway violations.

SALE OR CONCEALMENT

At approximately 6 p.m. on Oct. 24, Officer Charles A. Austin Jr. responded to the Rent-A-Center at 1800 Post Road for a report of larceny.

At the scene, the location’s manager told Austin that a woman had rented several items and had neither paid for nor returned them. The items included a living room set valued at $2,433 and a washer and dryer valued at $2,339.52. The woman initially missed payments in late August and later did not sign for certified mail from Rent-A-Center, the manager said.

Austin documented the matter and a warrant was issued for the woman’s arrest on a charge of sale or concealment of leased personal property.

At approximately 2:30 p.m. on Dec. 27, Ebony Johnson, 33, 12 Sutton Lane, Apt. 102, North Kingstown, responded to Warwick Police headquarters to turn herself in on the warrant. She was processed and held pending an appearance before a bail commissioner.

SHOPLIFTING

Just after 4 p.m. on Dec. 21, Officer Kyle J. Fitzsimmons responded to the Macy’s at Warwick Mall for a report of shoplifting. Dispatch advised that a male suspect was in the custody of asset protection personnel.

At the scene, an asset protection officer told Fitzsimmons that the suspect had been observed selecting a jacket and two shirts before entering a fitting room with the items. When the man left the fitting room, he was wearing the jacket he had selected underneath a jacket he had worn into the store. The man then exited the store without making any attempt to pay.

At that point, the man was met by asset protection personnel and escorted back inside the store. The jacket, valued at $159, was recovered.

Christopher R. Storti, 19, 79 Lexington Ave., Cranston, was arrested on charged of shoplifting and willful trespassing. He was transported to Warwick Police headquarters and held as a bail and probation violator.

LARCENY

Shortly before 4:30 p.m. on Dec. 30, Officer Thomas R. Paine responded to the lobby of Warwick Police headquarters to meet with a reporting party regarding a larceny complaint.

The reporting party told Paine she had gone to eat at the Buffalo Wild Wings at Warwick Mall after shopping on the afternoon of Dec. 28. When her boyfriend arrived to pick her up, she said she discovered one of her bags was missing.

The bag was said to have contained a jacket valued at $300, a pair of sunglasses valued at $150, three pairs of shoes with a combined value of $120 and a pair of earrings valued at $80.

No additional information was immediately available. The matter was documented and forwarded to detectives.

SUSPENDED LICENSE

Shortly after 12 p.m. on Dec. 30, Officer Thomas W. Greene responded to the area of Main and Gertrude avenues for a report of a motor vehicle accident with no injuries.

At the scene, Greene made contact with the operator of one of the vehicles, described as a gray 2011 Mazda 6. The officer reports the operator immediately indicated his license was suspended. A records check confirmed the suspension and revealed the operator had three previous convictions for driving with a suspended license.

Daryl Scott Gelewski, 48, 173 Wethersfield Drive, Warwick, was arrested on a charge of driving with a suspended license, third or subsequent offense, and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. He was later released with a summons to appear in Third Division District Court.
