MAN DIES IN FIRE

A man was found dead at the scene of a house fire last week, authorities say.

The body of Stephen E. Barker, 50, was discovered after firefighters entered his 317 Namquid Drive residence during the early morning hours of July 16, according to a statement from Detective Lt. Andrew Sullivan.

“The cause and manner of death have not yet been determined and are pending an autopsy,” Sullivan’s statement reads. “The incident is not considered suspicious. The ongoing investigation involves the Warwick Fire Department, Warwick Police Department and the Rhode Island State Fire Marshals office.”

Police and fire personnel responded to the Namquid road home at approximately 3:30 a.m. on July 16 and “found the structure fully engulfed in flames,” the statement reads. “Entry into the structure was initially delayed by the fire condition and other factors. Upon entry firefighters located one adult male victim who was deceased.”

DUI

Shortly before 1:30 a.m. on July 4, Officer Joseph DiIorio was conducting a patrol northbound on Jefferson Boulevard when he observed a Honda Civic with Rhode Island registration traveling south at a high rate of speed. The vehicle was “swerving back and forth not maintaining its lane of travel from lane to lane with a headlight out,” the officer reports.

DiIorio turned to follow the vehicle and clocked its speed at 62 mph in a 35 mph zone. At that point, he initiated a motor vehicle stop and made contact with the female operator, who is said to have exhibited “bloodshot watery eyes and slurred speech.”

The operator is said to have acknowledged consuming alcohol that night and agreed to field sobriety testing, which she reportedly failed.

Glennys M. Garcia Morales, 36, 60 Julian St., Apt. 1, Providence, was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. While at headquarters, she is said to have refused a chemical breath test.

Garcia Morales was later released into the custody of a sober adult with a summons to appear in Third Division District Court on a charge of driving under the influence. She was additionally cited for refusal to submit to a chemical test and laned roadway violations.

STOLEN VEHICLE

At approximately 10:19 p.m. on July 13, Officer Kevin Warren responded to the Target store at 1245 Bald Hill Road for a report of a stolen vehicle.

At the scene, the reporting party told Warren that he arrived for work at Target at approximately 5:20 p.m. that day. He told the officer he believes he dropped his keys in the parking lot on his way inside. When he left work shortly after 10 p.m., he discovered his vehicle was gone.

On the afternoon of July 14, Warren conducted follow-up with a loss prevention employee at Target and viewed security camera footage from the parking lot. It showed an unidentifiable person entering the reporting party’s vehicle and leaving the scene at approximately 6:11 p.m.

The matter was forwarded to detectives.

SUSPENDED LICENSE

Just before 1 p.m. on July 15, Officer Bruce Law responded to Picasso’s Pizza at 2323 Warwick Ave. for a report of a hit-and-run accident.

At the scene, the reporting party said he had been traveling south on Warwick Avenue near the Sandy Lane intersection in his 2014 Chevy Malibu at the time of the incident. As he took a right turn onto Sandy Lane, the man said, a Ford pickup truck entered his lane and struck the front driver’s side of his vehicle. The Malibu’s operator then pulled into the Picasso’s parking lot, while the Ford continued down Sandy Lane.

The Malibu’s operator said he did not wish to pursue charges in the matter. According to Law, subsequent records check revealed the operator’s license was suspended and that he had five previous convictions for driving on a suspended license.

Brian D. Lavery, 60, 144 Hatchery Road, North Kingstown, was arrested on a charge of driving with a suspended license, third or subsequent offense, and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. He was later released with a summons to appear in Third Division District Court.

SHOPLIFTING

Just after noon on July 7, Officer Albert Marano Jr. responded to the Barnes & Noble store at 1350 Bald Hill Road regarding two previous shoplifting incidents.

At the scene, an employee of the store told Marano that on two separate occasions, two suspects – one male, one female – had stolen Legos from the store. The incidents took place on June 28 and July 5, the employee said. In the first incident, the stolen merchandise was valued at nearly $400. In the second incident, the stolen merchandise had a value of nearly $600.

Marano was provided with descriptions of the suspects and security camera footage of the second incident. The matter was documented and forwarded to detectives.

VANDALISM

Shortly before 11 a.m. on July 8, Officer David Boardman responded to East Coast Collision at 1310 Jefferson Blvd. for a report of malicious damage to a motor vehicle.

At the scene, the reporting party told Boardman that on July 6, he had discovered scratches and dents all over his 1988 Chevrolet Camaro. He estimated the value of the damage at $15,000. The vehicle had been parked behind the business.

The damage was documented.

Just before 2:30 p.m. on July 13, Officer Kyle Fitzsimmons responded to the Battery Shop at 2411 Post Road for a report of malicious damage.

At the scene, the store’s owner told Fitzsimmons that he had previously reported the theft of catalytic converters, wheels and tires from vehicles at the location on July 7. He subsequently discovered the rear passenger-side window on another vehicle at the site had been smashed. The vehicle’s security cage had also been pried and damaged. A check of the vehicle revealed its jack was the only item missing. The jack was discovered under the vehicle that had been stripped of its wheels and tires during the earlier incident.

Fitzsimmons sought security camera footage from nearby businesses. The matter was documented.

LARCENY

Shortly before 11 a.m. on July 12, Officer Michael Caradimos responded to the rear parking lot of the AutoZone at 2720 Post Road for a report of larceny from a motor vehicle.

At the scene, the reporting party – a truck driver – told Caradimos that he parked his 2003 Chevy Impala at the business at around 5 a.m. on June 30. He had permission to leave the vehicle in the lot while he departed the area for work for roughly two weeks. When he returned at approximately 10 a.m. on July 12, he discovered the vehicle’s catalytic converter had been removed.

There was no physical evidence at the scene. Caradimos pursued security camera footage from a nearby business, and the matter was documented and forwarded to detectives.

At approximately 1:19 p.m. on July 14, Officer David Boardman responded to Rexel at 380 Jefferson Blvd. regarding a report of larceny.

At the scene, the reporting party said he parked his 2005 Dodge Ram at the location at approximately 6:50 a.m. that day. When he returned at around 1:15, he discovered vitamin pills kept in his vehicle were now on the ground. He then observed the vehicle’s center console was open.

The reporting party said several items were stolen from the vehicle, including about $20 in change, phone and tablet chargers, a flashlight, tools and body spray. The combined value of the items was estimated at roughly $100.

There were no signs of forced entry into the vehicle, which had been left unlocked. No security camera footage was immediately available.
