DUTY TO STOP

Just after noon on Aug. 2, Officer Nicholas Demarco responded to a report of a hit-and-run incident at the intersection of Metro Center Boulevard and Greenwich Avenue. Dispatch advised that a black GMC pickup truck involved in the incident had left the scene and was being followed by the other driver, who was on the line.

Dispatch then advised the vehicle had pulled into a parking lot on Oaklawn Avenue in Cranston. Demarco and another officer then responded to that location.

Demarco made contact with the driver who had contacted police. She told the officer that she had been stopped at a red light at the Metro Center Boulevard and Greenwich Avenue intersection when the operator of the GMC put his vehicle into reverse and struck the front of her vehicle. She said the operator of the GMC got out of his vehicle and apologized, asking her not to call the police because he did not have a license. The GMC’s operator then left the scene, she said.

Demarco then spoke with other officers, who had determined through a records check that the operator of the GMC had a suspended license and two previous convictions for driving with a suspended license.

Corey Malek, 36, 14 Dunham Ave., Coventry, was arrested on charged of duty to stop for an accident resulting in damage to an attended vehicle and driving with a suspended license, third or subsequent offense. He was held pending an appearance before a bail commissioner.

SHOPLIFTING

On July 29, Officer Daniel O’Connell responded to Ulta Beauty at 1350 Bald Hill Road for a report of a previous shoplifting incident.

At the scene, the store’s manager told O’Connell that just before 5:30 p.m. on July 28, two women entered the store and began selecting items from the fragrance department. The women were observed concealing the merchandise in their personal bags before exiting the store without making any attempt to pay for the items. The women were said to be wearing face masks and were believed to be in their 20s.

O’Connell returned to the store to obtain a copy of security camera footage from the time of the incident, as well as an itemized receipt listing 17 stolen items with a combined value of roughly $2,000.

The matter was documented and forwarded to detectives.

At approximately 4:41 p.m. on July 28, Officer Stanley Hermanowski responded to Macy’s at the Warwick Mall for a report of shoplifting.

At the scene, a loss prevention employee at the store told Hermanowski that a man had been observed removing a button-down shirt from a hanger and concealing the item in his pants. The man was then seen removing another shirt from a hanger before attempting to remove its security sensor. The man then exited the store without making any attempt to pay for the shirts, at which point he was met by loss prevention and escorted back inside. The shirts, with a combined value of $109, were recovered.

Raphael Zinno, 30, 381 Orms St., Apt. 2, Providence, was arrested on a charge of shoplifting and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. He was later released with a summons to appear in Third Division District Court.

LARCENY

On the afternoon of July 30, Officer Sara Goes responded to the Sparrows Point I Apartments on Hardig Road for a report of a missing license plate.

At the scene, the reporting party told Goes that her vehicle – a 2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser – had been parked in the far end of the complex’s parking lot for a month. When she returned to the vehicle that morning, she discovered its front license plate was missing.

No security camera footage was available. The matter was documented.

At approximately 4:48 p.m. on Aug. 2, Officer Ben Bratko responded to a Grace Avenue home for a report of larceny. Dispatch advised that the reporting party indicated his son’s bicycle had been stolen from Irma Avenue.

At the scene, the reporting party said her son had been staying with his grandparents on Irma Avenue the previous night. The boy’s bicycle had been placed in the home’s fenced-in backyard at approximately 8:30 p.m. on Aug. 1. When the boy went to retrieve it at approximately 4 p.m. on Aug. 2, it was missing.

No serial number for the bicycle was available. The matter was documented.

VANDALISM

At approximately 3:30 p.m. on July 26, Officer Damian Andrews responded to the lobby of Warwick Police headquarters to meet with a reporting party regarding a malicious damage complaint.

The reporting party told Andrews that his vehicle had been damaged while parked outside his Plenty Street home sometime between 7 p.m. on July 25 and 7:30 a.m. on July 26. The damage included two “suspicious” scratches to the left rear panel of the vehicle, described as a gray 2016 BMW.

The matter was documented.

At approximately 4:47 p.m. on Aug. 3, Officer Frank Montanaro responded to the lobby of Warwick Police headquarters to meet with a reporting party regarding malicious damage to a motor vehicle.

The reporting party told Montanaro that her 2010 Toyota RAV4 was keyed at some point in the preceding week and half while parked in the back lot of her apartment complex on West Shore Road. Montanaro observed scratches on the vehicle’s right front and rear passenger doors.

The matter was documented for insurance purposes.

SUSPENDED LICENSE

Shortly before noon on Aug. 4, Officer Aaron Steere was conducting a patrol when he observed a white 2010 Toyota exit the parking lot of the Motel 6 on Jefferson Boulevard. The vehicle’s registration showed as having expired in May 2020, and Steere followed the vehicle and initiated a stop on Interstate 95 north just after exit 15.

Steere made contact with the operator, who was found through a records check to have a suspended license and two previous convictions for driving with a suspended license.

Steven J. Reyes, 28, 2 Elmira Ave., North Providence, was issued a summons to appear in Third Division District Court on a charge of driving with a suspended license, third or subsequent offense. A passenger with an active license was allowed to take custody of the vehicle.
