STOP, PURSUIT, CRASH LEAD TO CHARGES

Two men and one juvenile have been charged in connection with a series of events – including a foot pursuit and a motor vehicle crash – that resulted in a woman being hospitalized.

Darlin Daniel Gomez, 22, of 22 Quimby St. in Warwick, is charged with possession of a stolen firearm and possession of a controlled substance, according to a statement from Warwick Police. He was ordered held on $10,000 bond with surety following his Nov. 19 arraignment. He had also been wanted on multiple bench warrants at the time of his arrest.

Branley Ferreras, 19, of 126 Moorefield St., Apt. 1, Providence, is charged with receiving stolen goods. He was ordered held on $3,000 bond with surety following his arraignment on Nov. 19, and had also been wanted on an active bench warrant at the time of his arrest.

The juvenile, meanwhile, is said to be facing “numerous charges.”

The arrests stem from a series of events that began just after 11:30 a.m. on Nov. 18, according to Warwick Police.

At that time, an officer on patrol observed a vehicle with heavy tint on its windows and Rhode Island registration plates that came back as stolen. The officer initiated a motor vehicle stop on Quimby Street, at which point “the male driver and a male passenger immediately exited the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot.”

“The officer was able to stop them and during his initial contact with them, observed both men acting in a suspicious manner by constantly trying to conceal their hands in their waistbands,” the statement continues. “The officer believed the men could be holding a firearm or contraband and drew his firearm for safety. He ordered both men to the ground. Both men complied, but continually would not show their hands. Within seconds of this occurring, another passenger in the vehicle that the officer could not initially see because of the heavily tinted windows moved into the driver’s seat and operated the vehicle in reverse at a high rate of speed nearly hitting the officer and the two males who were being held at gunpoint on the ground.”

Other officers responding to the scene observed the vehicle – which by this point had a blown tire and was operating erratically – on Airport Road. A short pursuit of roughly two miles followed, ending when the vehicle traveled through a red light as it turned left onto Warwick Avenue from Narragansett Parkway and struck another vehicle. The female operator of the second vehicle was transported to Rhode Island Hospital with injuries described as serious but not life-threatening.

“The male operator who had caused the collision was determined to be a juvenile. He is currently facing numerous charges,” the statement from police reads. “A stolen firearm was located under the driver seat of the vehicle that was fleeing from officers. At the scene of the initial traffic stop, officers located ammunition that one of the male occupants discarded from his pants.”

FATAL CRASH

State Police are investigating a fatal, single-vehicle crash that occurred on Interstate 95 south in Warwick on the night of Nov. 20.

Ravid Rahul, 41, of Exeter was transported to Rhode Island Hospital after troopers responded to the scene at approximately 7:40 p.m., according to a statement. He later died as a result of his injuries.

The crash occurred south of Cowesett Road, according to State Police. Troopers arriving at the scene found a 2017 Kia Sportage had struck several trees and come to a stop west of the roadway.

“The preliminary investigation indicates Mr. Rahul exited the roadway for an unknown reason and struck several trees,” the statement reads. “Speed and alcohol do not appear to be contributing factors.”

STOLEN VEHICLE

Shortly before 8 a.m. on Nov. 13, Officer John Madden responded to a Lawn Avenue home for a report of a stolen motor vehicle.

At the scene, the reporting party said when he woke up that morning, he discovered his 2019 Volkswagen Atlantis was missing from his driveway. The vehicle had been parked at the home at approximately 7 p.m. the previous night. The reporting party was unsure whether the keys had been left in the vehicle. He told Madden he was up to date with the vehicle’s payments and that no one else had keys.

Madden “observed the area from where the vehicle was taken and did not see any broken glass to indicate that the vehicle was broken into by someone.”

The matter was documented and the vehicle was reported as stolen.

LARCENY

Shortly after 1:30 p.m. on Nov. 9, Officer Nia Pina responded to a Sefton Avenue home for a report of larceny. Dispatch advised a shed at the property had been broken into overnight.

At the scene, the reporting party said multiple items – two leaf blowers, a 100-foot power cord, a drill, and three plastic barrels, all valued at roughly $20 – had been taken from the shed. The items had last been seen during the week of Nov. 1.

It was unclear whether the shed had been locked. No security camera footage was immediately available. The matter was documented and forwarded to detectives. ***

Shortly before 12:30 a.m. on Nov. 16, Officer Brenen Cardoza responded to the Radisson Hotel at 2081 Post Road for a larceny complaint.

At the scene, the reporting party told Cardoza that he and a friend had left his room at the hotel at approximately 1:30 p.m. on Nov. 15. When the reporting party returned to the room alone at approximately 11:30 p.m., he found some of his belongings were missing.

The missing items included a backpack, an iPad with a keyboard, four sweaters, a sweatsuit, shirts, shorts and a Honda car key belonging to the reporting party’s friend. Not including the car key, the items had an estimated combined value of more than $1,400.

The reporting party said aside from his friend, no one else had access to his room. Hotel staff told Cardoza no one had entered the room during the timeframe in question. The matter was documented.

SHOPLIFTING

Shortly after 1:30 p.m. on Nov. 14, Officer Jordan Guyton responded to the Macy’s store at the Warwick Mall for a report of a shoplifting incident in progress. Dispatch advised that a male suspect had taken items from the perfume section before fleeing on foot north toward West Natick Road.

While en route to the scene, Guyton spotted and made contact with a man matching the suspect’s description. The officer reports observing two boxes of cologne in the man’s possession and “in plain view.” The man is said to have acknowledged the items, which had a combined value of nearly $200, were stolen.

Carlton J. Purdy, 48, 3 Maple St., Cranston, was arrested on charges of shoplifting and willful trespassing and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. ***

At approximately 3:40 p.m. on Nov. 16, Officer Richard Odell responded to the Macy’s store at the Warwick Mall for a report of a shoplifting suspect in the custody of asset protection personnel.

At the scene, an asset protection detective at the store told Odell that the man had been observed on surveillance as he selected seven clothing items, including multiple sweatshirts, “with no regard for price, color or size.” The man then exited the store without making any attempt to pay for the merchandise. At that point, he was met by store employees and escorted back inside. All seven items, with a combined value of $459.50, were recovered.

Richard Allen Buzon Jr., 38, 316 High St., Apt. 1, Westerly, was arrested on a charge of shoplifting and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. Records showed he was wanted on an active bench warrant issued from Third Division District Court, and he was held pending an appearance before a bail commissioner.
