PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Alex Clemmey, Hendricken

Alex Clemmey enjoyed a breakout campaign for the Hawks and was one of the state’s elite pitchers last spring. Clemmey was Hendricken’s ace and finished with a perfect 8-0 record and averaged more than two strikeouts per inning on the mound.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Alyssa Twomey, Pilgrim

Alyssa Twomey is once again the Beacon’s Softball Player of the Year as she was an even bigger force last spring. Twomey, who was also named the Gatorade Player of the Year, finished with an impressive 0.56 ERA and averaged nearly two strikeouts per inning. She finished the year with a .389 batting average and knocked in 23 runs and seven homers.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Braxton Bragg, Pilgrim

The Pilgrim boys lacrosse team was on a revenge tour in 2022 and would go on to finish undefeated and win the state title. Braxton Bragg was the team’s most dominant player throughout the historic run, finishing with a whopping 73 goals and 31 assists, which led the team in each.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Adeline Areson, Toll Gate

Adeline Areson is the Beacon’s Girls Lacrosse Player of the Year for the second time in a row, as she was even better her sophomore year for the Titans. Areson was the team’s top scorer and guided it to the semifinals after being moved up a division. Areson finished 56 goals and 11 assists, leading the team in each category.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Jack Ciunci, Hendricken

Jack Ciunci was the Hawks top performer at first singles and proved to be the state’s best overall player when he took the individual state championship last spring.

Abigail Vest had a stellar campaign for the Pats last fall and was their most consistent performer. She was a key piece to the team’s unlikely run to the state title appearance.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Ryan Dacey, Toll Gate

Ryan Dacey emerged as one of the state’s best players and arguably the best public school golfer this past spring. Dacey finished fifth overall in the individual state championship and would go on to reach the round of 32 in the Rhode Island Amateur tournament, which was the furthest a Toll Gate golfer ever advanced.

Ryan Osley was a big part of why the Hawks returned to the Division I playoffs. Osley was stellar all around, leading the team in kills, aces and hitting percentage.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Eze Wali, Hendricken

Expectations were high when Eze Wali transferred to Hendricken this winter and he delivered, averaging 18 points per game with five assists. He also saved some of his best basketball for the playoffs, hitting the game-winning 3-pointer against La Salle that sent the Hawks to the state championship where they eventually won over Classical.

Adeline Areson followed up her impressive freshman campaign with an even better sophomore season for Toll Gate. Areson was the Titans’ most consistent performer and spent time at multiple positions while leading the team in scoring. Areson was named to the All-Division III Second Team and the sub-division first squad.

Oce Lowe was Toll Gate’s top performer this past winter season. Expectations were high heading into the state championships, and she delivered by taking home a win in the 500 freestyle.

Although the Hawks did not claim the team championship in the pool, Nick Andrews put on a show and claimed three state titles individually. Andrews took home wins in the 100 free, 200 free, and was a member of the 400 free relay team that took gold.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Colton Whitfield, Hendricken

Colton Whitfield was the state’s top defensive player this past season and was key in the Hawks pulling off the upset to win the state championship. Not only was Whitfield a leader and elite defender, but he was also a big-time offensive option at the blue line for the Hawks, finishing with 10 goals and 14 assists.

Ayla Paley was one of the state’s most potent offensive weapons for the Warwick co-op this past hockey season, as she led the team with 14 goals and 15 points overall.

WRESTLER OF THE YEAR: Adolfo Betancur, Hendricken

Adolfo Betancur continued to be among the Rhode Island elite this past winter, winning his third consecutive heavyweight championship. Betancur did himself one better this time around, finishing the winter with a New England championship as well.

GYMNAST OF THE YEAR: Madsion Long, Warwick

Madison long was one of the top floor athletes throughout the season in Rhode Island and took the top spot for the Warwick co-op at the region tournament last winter. Long also went on to take 6th in the all-around competition, helping lead the team to a perfect season and region title.

Austin Kilduff was one of the state’s best keepers last fall and was key in getting the Pats back to the playoffs. Kilduff was a stone wall in net, finishing the season with eight shutouts and allowing just 15 goals in total across 17 games played.

Sarah Lynch enjoyed her best high school season last fall, guiding the Pats back to the playoffs and receiving All-American honors, as well as the Gatorade Player of the Year Award. She finished with 21 goals and seven assists while also chipping in as a midfielder.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Brady Burke, Pilgrim

Brady Burke was one of the state’s most productive players in the 2021 season and helped guide the Pats back to the playoffs. Burke led the team in receiving yards on offense with over 500 while finishing with nine touchdowns. He also led the defense in tackles and hauled in three interceptions to help impact both sides of the ball.

RUNNER OF THE YEAR: Troy Silvestri, Hendricken

Throughout last fall season, the Hawks struggled to find their top runner. As the season wore on and the lights got brighter, no Hawk stepped up and shined more than Troy Silvestri, who took seventh at states and fifth at the class championships. After guiding the Hawks to the state title, he turned around and had another tremendous outing at the Nike Northeast Regionals, where he took seventh.

Keaney Bayha made a splash her freshman season and was instantly one of the state’s elite runners. Despite coming from a small program, Bayha excelled throughout the season and took home top-10 finishes at both the Class and State Championships to put Pilgrim on the map.

Brandyn Durand finished his high school career on top and as one of the best track athletes Rhode Island has ever seen. Durand put on a show at the indoor state championships and took first place in the 300 dash and second in the 55 dash.

Keaney Bayha was the state’s best freshman this past year on the track and was Pilgrim’s top performer throughout the winter. Bayha capped off an impressive rookie campaign by taking fourth in the 1,000 meter run and second in the 3,000 run at the state championships.

Kamalie Pemberton was a do-it-all sprinter for the Hawks last spring track season and did his best work on the biggest stages. Pemberton would wrap up the spring by taking second in the 100 dash and was part of the 400 dash team that also finished in second place.

Elizabeth Cavanagh enjoyed a breakout campaign for Pilgrim last fall and was the team’s top forward all season long. Her performance helped her secure a spot on the coaches’ All-Division team. Cavanagh looks to improve this season as a senior and looks to be one of the division’s top players.
