Warwick co-op ‘looking for identity’

The Warwick girls hockey co-op is getting ready to dive into the meat of its schedule as it picks up its regular season after the holiday break.

Warwick sits at 1-2 to start the season. Ayla Paley has led the team in scoring with eight goals, while Georgia Feld has scored three and Faith Kennedy two. Feld has also chipped in two assists and Kennedy three.

Warwick has a new look this year as it also welcomed a trio  Chariho, who have already made their presence known.

“It all happened quick, but their athletic director reached out to ours and they made it work. We’re happy to have them, the three girls they gave us are younger players, and they’re hockey players, so it’s good to have them,” said Warwick coach Don Centracchio.

In goal for Warwick will be returner Mary Centracchio, who enjoyed a breakout campaign last winter. Don has been pleased with Mary’s development since last season and expects her to play a big role with this year’s group, which is made up primarily of underclassmen.

“Mary is one of our better players, she has played in a lot of big games and kept us from being outscored by wide margins.

It’s been a steady progression, we had her play in tournaments over the summer, she played with the boys and she competes with them. It’s up to her now if she wants to keep working hard at it,” said Don.

The team has two other goalies behind her, which has also allowed some flexibility in the lineup, which has been vital as the new girls get situated.

“I like the team, we have a very young team which is promising. We have a lot of developing players so we are trying to balance the playing time. This year, we have the luxury of having three goalies, which is allowing us to have Mary skate out because she’s a pretty good player, too. We want to try to give those other (goalies) time in order to continue to develop our program,” said Don.

Warwick will start back up with a pair of contests against Smithfield, who already dealt it a loss this season.

Although it is a tough pair of games, Coach Centracchio believes the team is ready to get back on the ice and make a statement.

“It’s going to be tough, Smithfield is ready to go and they do a good job. Our girls are still trying to find their identity.

It’s going to be a tough task, but they’re up to it and we’ve been very happy with the progress so far,” said Centracchio.
