Warwick co-op earns point at Smithfield

By ALEX SPONSELLER The Warwick co-op boys hockey team traveled north to Smithfield and tied the Sentinels 2-2 to open its season last Friday night.

Smithfield scored just 11 seconds into play off a Warwick defensive breakdown and would carry a 2-0 advantage into the third.

Warwick would battle back, getting a goal from Richie Cavanaugh then another from Jacob Pickering after pulling the goalie to send the game to overtime.

The two clubs battled in the extra period which would ultimately be a scoreless one.

“They showed a lot of character being down heading into the third period in that place. We played a great third period and played very well in overtime. It was a good way to start the season, we’ve still got a ways to go but the kids worked hard. It was a sold out crowd, a great atmosphere, we made some mistakes but they just kept going at it,” said Warwick coach Mike Boyajian.

Ryan Barlow had two assists in the win for Warwick while Lucas Hemond and Cooper Grossguth added one each. Warwick outshot Smithfield 29-23.

Boyajian was also pleased with his defensive performance, especially considering multiple players were moved from different positions.

“Our defense played very solid. (Ethan) Pezzullo and Gerard Schifino are returning defensemen, but Cooper and Jacob are learning the position and did a good job. Colin O’Dea also. They did a good job of filling in,” said Boyajian.

Warwick will next take on St. Patrick’s and Mount St. Charles. The team lost top forward Charlie Clements during opening night to injury, so it will look to adjust its strategy with the two powerhouses next on the schedule.

“It’s good to start that way and to grab a point on the road. We’re working on things, we may need to change our style a little bit, become a little more defensive. We’ll try a few new guys in the middle so that is where depth comes in, and we’re fortunate to have some pretty good freshmen ready to go,” said Boyajian. “We’ll have to have a different style forecheck, try to slow down these teams we’re playing.”
