Warwick boys co-op looks to bounce back

By ALEX SPONSELLER After a lengthy layoff due to a COVID-19 outbreak, the Warwick co-op boys hockey team would get back to the ice last week and go 0-1-1 against Cumberland and La Salle.

Warwick hit the road and traveled to Pawtucket to take on Cumberland on Friday and would walk away with a 3-3 tie.

Sean Mullaney and Ethan Pezzullo each scored in the second period and would get a third-period score from Ryan Barlow to take a 3-1 advantage late into regulation. The Clippers would surge in the final seven minutes, though, getting back-to-back goals to even things out and force overtime.

Neither team was able to capitalize and the clubs would settle for a 3-3 draw, earning one point apiece.

“It’s been tough coming back from the holiday break and the (COVID-19 situation), we were able to have an exhibition against Mount St. Charles which was good for the kids. We then played Cumberland and had a chance to get two points, we ended up with one, it is what it is,” said Warwick coach Mike Boyajian, who felt that his team’s inexperience showed in the final minutes of Friday’s game. “It’s a learning process, there’s a learning curve. We got a few goals, but you really don’t want to be giving up any at that time which is seven minutes left in the game. This is a young team that has not played at this level yet, a lack of focus for five seconds will cost you.”

The team turned around the following day to host powerhouse La Salle and would fall to the tune of a 5-2 score.

Warwick would trail just 3-2 heading into the third period thanks to goals from Lucas Hemond and Barlow, but the Rams would add some insurance with a pair of scores to run away with the victory.

Despite the loss, Boyajian was encouraged by the team’s first two periods, especially against a team like La Salle which currently sits in first place in the Division I standings.

“They’ll learn. They’ve seen the clips and they weren’t happy with themselves. They work hard so they’ll be fine. They didn’t fold in the overtime against Cumberland, we had our opportunities to win it. I was a little worried going back the next day against La Salle, but the kids fared well,” Boyajian said. “We got a point against Cumberland and then went up against a power like La Salle and they played very well. They didn’t back down and they fought their battles.”

Warwick dropped to 0-2-2 on the season and will hit the ice this Friday when it hosts Barrington at Thayer, then Saturday against neighbor Bishop Hendricken.
