North 12’s win state championship

By ALEX SPONSELLER The Warwick North softball 12-year-old All-Stars beat Portsmouth 3-0 last week to win the state championship and punch their ticket to this week’s upcoming regional tournament.

North faced an uphill battle in the early portion of the bracket when it fell in the opening round. Despite the tough start, the girls turned things around and went on to win three straight games to get the job done.

“It was huge, especially considering they lost the first game of the tournament so they had their backs up against the wall. We wanted to see them rebound well and they did,” said North coach Gary Dombeck.

Dombeck felt that the early loss may have been a positive in the long run for the team, as it played its best softball when every game was a must win.

“I think it did (help us). I think as the week went on it was good that they experienced a little adversity early on. They had to pick themselves up and dust themselves off and that’s what they did,” said Dombeck.

Next stop will be the regionals in Connecticut. Although North will be facing some stiff competition in the next leg of the race, Dombeck and company are confident as most of the roster has played outside of Rhode Island and also have plenty of experience hitting the field with one another.

“We are going to be playing some pretty experienced teams in Connecticut, so playing in these close games and getting the win will help us in the long run,” said Dombeck. “Most of these girls have played together for a few years now which helps. Many of these girls have been to regionals so they know what to expect which is good.”

Playing clean, confident softball will be the key to success at regionals, according to Dombeck.

“It is going to be about minimizing the mistakes, playing within yourself and doing the best you can to come out on top. Hopefully they carry that into the next round,” Dombeck said.

The Warwick North 12’s included: Cassidy Curtis, Ella Roberts, Gianna Myers, Gretchen Dombeck, Hailey Norman, Hope Fitzpatrick, Lia Wasilewski, Lily Andrews, Lyla Amitrano, Madison Tuirok, Mia Boyajian, Reagan Motta and Rory Kelaghan.
