DUI

At approximately 2:30 a.m. on April 10, Officer Tyler Luiz responded to a motor vehicle accident on East Avenue’s West Natick Bridge.

Warwick Fire and West Warwick Police personnel were already on scene when Luiz arrived. He observed a 2015 Subaru Impreza parked on the westbound sidewalk with “severe damage” to its front end and front wheel wells. Warwick Fire personnel were speaking with the vehicle’s male operator, who was examined but refused transportation to Kent Hospital.

Luiz then spoke with the man, who is said to have acknowledged consuming alcohol that night. The officer reports the man had a “strong odor” of alcohol on his breath, and his eyes were “glossy and bloodshot.”

The operator is said to have agreed to undergo field sobriety testing, which he reportedly failed.

Brandon S. Riggs, 29, 37 Fairwood Drive, Cranston, was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. While at headquarters, he is said to have refused a chemical breath test.

Briggs was later released and provided with a courtesy transport to his residence. He was issued a summons to appear in Third Division District Court on a charge of driving under the influence, and he was additionally cited for refusal to submit to a chemical test. ***

Shortly before 3 a.m. on April 11, Officer Keara Enos was conducting a patrol in the area of police headquarters on Veterans Memorial Drive when he observed a vehicle that appeared to be parked on the rear access road to the building. The officer identified the vehicle as a 2002 Buick Century, which was not a police vehicle and thus not authorized to be in the area where it was parked.

After turning around at the rotary, Enos observed that the vehicle had backed into the parking lot of the Mobil gas station next to the access road. It then pulled onto Veterans Memorial Drive, heading west.

The officer followed the vehicle and observed it traveling between 11 and 17 mph in a 30 mph zone. Additionally, the officer saw the vehicle’s passenger-side tires “touch the white fog line multiple times.” A records check then revealed the vehicle’s registration was expired.

Enos initiated a stop on Toll Gate Road and made contact with the operator of the Buick, who the officer reports had an “overwhelming odor of alcohol” on his breath. The man is said to have acknowledged consuming alcohol earlier that night. He is also said to have agreed to undergo field sobriety testing, which he reportedly failed.

John P. Vanorsouw, 57, 40 West Wrentham Road, Apt. 5, Cumberland, was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. While at headquarters, he is said to have agreed to undergo a chemical breath testing, which reportedly found his blood alcohol level to be above the legal limit.

Vanorsouw was later transported to Kent Hospital for detox. He was issued a summons to appear in Third Division District Court on a charge of driving under the influence and cited for driving with expired registration, laned roadway violations and obedience to traffic control devices.

SHOPLIFTING

Shortly before 5 p.m. on April 11, Officer Michael Rocchio responded to a report of a shoplifting incident in progress at the Warwick Mall Macy’s. Dispatch then advised that a female suspect was in the custody of loss prevention, but it was feared her male companion, who was outside the store, may start a disturbance.

When Rocchio arrived, the suspect’s male companion had left the scene. Asset protection personnel advised the man was not a suspect in the shoplifting incident.

An asset protection detective then told Rocchio that the female suspect had been observed selecting multiple men’s and women’s clothing items – 14 in all, with a combined valued of $844 – and concealing them in a shopping bag before exiting the store without making any attempt to pay. The woman was then met by store employees and escorted back inside.

Aryonna B. Garedo, 29, 101 Cadorna St., East Providence, was arrested on a charge of shoplifting and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. She was later released with a summons to appear in Third Division District Court.

LARCENY

Just after 9 a.m. on April 9, Officer Britton Kelly spoke by phone with a reporting party regarding a larceny complaint.

The reporting party told Kelly that sometime overnight on April 1, her son’s bicycle had been stolen. The bike had last been used and seen on March 31, after which it was locked outside the family’s apartment complex. The next day, it was missing, and the reporting party said its lock “had been severely damaged and/or cut.”

The reporting party said she had waited to contact police in hopes the bike would be recovered. She then learned other bicycle thefts had occurred in the area.

The bicycle was described as a 26-inch Mongoose brand boys’ mountain bike. The matter was documented and forwarded to detectives. ***

Just before 11:30 p.m. on April 9, Officer David Waddington responded to the area of Broad Street and Pawtuxet Avenue for a report of a car sitting on blocks with its tires removed. The reporting party told dispatch that the vehicle also had front-end damage.

Waddington located the vehicle in question, a Honda CRV, on Overhead Way. The vehicle had neither tires nor rims and it was sitting on the ground, although there were “two cobblestone blocks underneath the vehicle.” There were also “several lug nuts” in the road.

A check of the Honda’s VIN revealed it had been reported stolen out of Providence on March 29. There were no keys with the vehicle and its original registration plates were missing. Another Rhode Island license plate that had been affixed to the vehicle was recovered.

The vehicle was towed from the scene, and Providence Police were notified of its recovery.

Shortly after 12 p.m. on April 10, Officer Jeffrey Taranto responded to O2 Global Chauffeured Service Inc. at 2 Commerce Drive for a report of four stolen catalytic converters.

At the scene, the reporting party – a garage manager and mechanic – told Taranto that the theft of the converters had been discovered that morning. The converters, each valued at between $1,500 and $2,000, had been stolen from four Ford F-59 bus trolleys at the location. No other vehicles appeared to have been affected.

The trolleys had last been checked on April 3-4, the reporting party told Taranto. No security camera footage was immediately available.

The matter was documented and forwarded to detectives.
