SHOPLIFTING
On April 21 at roughly 1:14 p.m., Officer Alyssa Comeau was dispatched to the Target location at 1245 Bald Hill Road following a shoplifting report. A Target employee stated that he had observed a woman enter the store on surveillance cameras with a reusable bag and take a shopping cart before placing some items from the Ulta section in the cart. After beginning physical floor surveillance, the employee observed the suspect concealing items from the paper goods, pet and sporting goods sections of the store within her purse and reusable bag. At the self-checkout, the suspect scanned and paid for only two of the items before beginning to walk towards the exit with unpaid items still in the reusable bag.
After the employee stopped the suspect at the exit door, he advised Officer Comeau that he wished to press charges and to instate a no trespass order. The suspect admitted that she had attempted to leave the store without paying for the concealed items, whose total value came to $189.92. After being taken to Warwick Police Department headquarters, the suspect was issued a district court summons for one count of shoplifting and then released without issue.

They had been advised via dispatch that the suspect had stolen multiple pairs of sunglasses and had left the store to travel northbound on Bald Hill Road. After observing a man walking on the street who matched the suspect’s description, Officer Orellana made a U-turn to make contact, at which point the suspect crossed the street over the grass median; the officer crossed the grass median and succeeded in making contact with the suspect.
After Officer Orellana detained the suspect and confiscated a knife on his hip that appeared to be clearly over three inches long, the suspect denied involvement with the shoplifting.
