VEHICLE RECOVERED

Shortly before 6 a.m. on May 10, Office Nathaniel Gray was conducting a patrol in the parking lot of the Motel 6 on Jefferson Boulevard when he observed a Toyota Highlander without a front license plate.

“I noted that it was suspicious that the vehicle was backed into a spot so that its registration was not visible in an area with a high level of criminal activity,” Gray reports.

Gray exited his cruiser and walked to the rear of the Highlander, which did have a license plate. A check of the registration revealed the vehicle had been reported stolen out of Providence. A VIN check confirmed it was the stolen vehicle.

A witness subsequently told police she had observed the vehicle enter the parking lot between 3:30 and 4:30 that morning. After its occupants did not check in, she conducted a check and observed two men walking in the area.

Gray also reports observing “minor scratches” to the vehicle’s front driver’s side bumper.

The vehicle was towed from the scene and Providence Police were notified. Security camera footage was not immediately available.

FRAUD

Shortly after 6 p.m. on May 15, Officer Johnathan DiPietro and other officers responded to the Macy’s at the Warwick Mall for a report of a fraud incident in progress.

“Dispatch advised that a female … had called in with the manager at Macy’s stating that there was a suspect in the store currently using her stolen credit card at a register,” the officer reports. The reporting party’s wallet had apparently been stolen while she was shopping.

At the scene, DiPietro met with a loss prevention officer and began a lookout for the suspect. Shortly thereafter, the officer observed a man matching the suspect’s description exiting the store and crossing the parking lot. At that point, he made contact with and detained the man.

The loss prevention officer then identified the man as the suspect. According to Macy’s, security camera footage showed the suspect use the stolen credit card to purchase $1,133 worth of women’s fragrances and two luxury watches with a combined value of $2,190.

Kevahn Thorpe, 30, Queens, New York, was arrested on charges of fraudulent use of a credit card, conspiracy and receiving stolen goods and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. He was held pending an appearance before a bail commissioner.

SHOPLIFTING

At approximately 5:45 p.m. on May 9, Officer Johnathan DiPietro responded to the Macy’s at the Warwick Mall for a report of a shoplifting incident in progress. Dispatch then advised that a male suspect was in the custody of loss prevention personnel.

In a written statement, an asset protection detective told police the suspect had been observed entering the store at approximately 5:30 that afternoon. The man is said to have started checking out security sensors on clothing items in the men’s department and at one point spent several minutes attempting to remove the sensor from a hooded sweatshirt.

“After several minutes of trying, he selected another hooded sweatshirt that did not have a sensor on it,” DiPietro’s report reads. He is then said to have exited the store with both sweatshirts, passing all points of purchase. At that point, he was met by store employees and escorted back inside. Both sweatshirts, each valued at $70, were recovered.

Robert A. Slaney, 23, 460 Pine St., Providence, was arrested on a charge of shoplifting and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. He was later released with a summons to appear in Third Division District Court.

WARRANT

Just before 2 a.m. on May 11, Officer Nathaniel Gray was conducting a patrol in the area of the La Quinta Inn on Jefferson Boulevard when he observed a Nissan Cavalier leave the Motel 6 parking lot and head north.

“As I was behind the vehicle, I observed it drive in a suspiciously slow manner,” Gray reports. “The vehicle then switched from the left lane to the right lane, ultimately takin a prohibited left turn from the right lane into the Mobil gas station.”

Gray initiated a motor vehicle stop and discovered through a records check that the Cavalier’s registered owner was wanted on three Superior Court bench warrants. He then made contact with the operator, who was confirmed to be the registered owner.

Thomas E. Walsh, 32, with a last known address on Violet Street in Providence, was taken into custody on the warrants and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. He was later transported to the Adult Correctional Institutions. He was additionally cited for manner of turning at intersection.

Shortly before 1:30 a.m. on May 13, Officer Keara Enos was conducting a patrol on Kilvert Street when he observed a man walking west in the eastbound lane of travel.

“The man was walking well into the roadway in an area that was very poorly lit, making visibility difficult,” Enos reports.

Enos made contact with the man to check on his condition. A subsequent records check revealed he was wanted on two active bench warrants, one issued from Superior Court and the other from Sixth Division District Court.

Bryan N. Anderson, 23, 173 Julian St., Apt. 2, Providence, was taken into custody on the warrants and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. He was later transported to the Adult Correctional Institutions.

At approximately 5:50 a.m. on May 14, Officer Keara Enos responded to the Courtyard by Marriott on Jefferson Park Road for a report of suspicious activity.

“Dispatch advised that hotel staff were concerned regarding two individuals who were acting strangely,” Enos reports. “The two individuals were reported to be sitting in a silver truck in the parking lot outside of the hotel lobby.”

At the scene, Enos observed a Ford F-150 parked outside the hotel lobby with a man in the driver’s seat and a woman in the passenger’s seat. “As I pulled my cruiser behind the truck,” the officer reports, “the male quickly exited and went inside the hotel lobby.”

Enos then made contact with the vehicle’s passenger, who said she and the man, who she identified as her boyfriend, “were having difficulty checking into the hotel due to some discrepancy with online booking.” At that point, the man returned to the vehicle. The officer reports he was “acting very nervously and was speaking in incomplete sentences.”

A records check subsequently revealed that both of the vehicle’s occupants were wanted on active bench warrants – the man’s from Third Division District Court, and the woman’s from Superior Court.

Katelynn A. Penta, 32, 25 East Greenwich Ave., Apt. B, West Warwick, and Kristofer R. Rodrigues, 35, 1809 Old Louisquisset Pike, Lincoln, were taken into custody on the warrants and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing.
