SHOPLIFTING
At 4:26 p.m., April 4, Warwick Police responded to Target at the Warwick Mall, 400 Bald Hill Road, for the report of a shoplifting in progress.
Store security contacted police after detaining a “cooperative female who had just shoplifted.”
Ultimately, security told police that for this incident, they didn’t want to press charges, just have police issue the suspect, identified as a Cranston woman, a no trespass order from the store.
According to store security, the suspect had allegedly shoplifted from the store numerous times, and security had been documented the incidents. The report and surveillance footage were turned over to police for further investigation.
The store turned over documentation tied to seven “past unreported shopliftings” (five of which could be substantiated) involving the suspect, including an itemized list of stolen items.
Asset protection also handed an “admission statement,” which store security allegedly “received” from the suspect while she remained at the scene. The woman allegedly admitted to “the theft of $205.97 of various merchandise through skip scanning,” Warwick Police Officer Sara L. Goes wrote in the incident report.
The five dates spanned between Feb. 7 and March 29 of this year. The alleged total amount “stolen and not recovered” totaled $140.27.
Store security told police that the suspect “selects items off the shelves and ‘skip scans’ at the register every time,” according to the report.
Police identified the suspect as Donna L. Rimay, 63, of 103 Woodmont Drive, Cranston. Police issued arrest warrants for five counts of Shoplifting.
On April 22, Rimay turned herself in on the warrants for misdemeanor Shoplifting. She was taken into custody, searched and booked.
DUI
Around 8 p.m., April 22, Warwick Police were dispatched to Vito’s Pizza and Bar for the report of a motor vehicle crash without injuries.
A driver on the scene told police that another driver (who also remained on the scene), rear-ended her vehicle as she was stopped to turn into the pizza parlor with her blinker activated.
While waiting for police, the victim driver told police that “she could smell alcohol on” the other driver’s breath, and he allegedly “kept repeating himself” while speaking.
Police identified the allegedly intoxicated driver as Antonio F. Peixoto, 64, of 40 Yale Drive, Coventry.
“It should be noted during my conversation with Peixoto there was a strong odor of alcohol emanating form his breath,” Warwick Police Officer Noah J. Kane wrote in the arrest report. “I observed Peixoto’s eyes to be glossy and bloodshot.”
Police asked Peixoto to submit to a series of standardized field sobriety tests. He allegedly refused. He also allegedly refused to consent to a chemical breath test.
“Based on the totality of my observations, I made the decision that Peixoto was in fact operating a motor vehicle under the influence of intoxicating liquor and or drugs,” Kane wrote.
Peixoto was arrested, processed and charged with DUI of Liquor (BAC unknown, first offense) and cited for Refusal to Submit to a Chemical Test (first offense).
DRUG POSSESSION
Around 9:26 a.m., April 24, Warwick Police responded to 636 Centerville Road for the report of a driver who appeared to be asleep behind the wheel, in the roadway, in the westbound lanes of travel.
Police identified the driver as Michael Perkins, 46, of 21 Wayland Ave., Providence.
According to police at the scene, Perkins consented to field sobriety tests. Following the tests, police determined he was not showing signs of driving under the influence and would not be charged for DUI.
Police allegedly found a “substance packaged in multiple small tie off bags in plain view,” according to the arrest report. When police asked “Perkins what the powdered substance in his vehicle was, he stated that it was most likely heroin possibly fentanyl.”
He was arrested and searched. Police charged Perkins with Possession of a Schedule I/V Controlled Substance (first offense). He was issued a summons and released around 12:30 p.m.
