STOLEN VEHICLE

At approximately 8:30 p.m. on Aug. 3, Officer Connor Bemis and other officers responded to the area of Post Road and Natick Avenue for a report of a stolen motor vehicle.

Bemis reports the owner of the vehicle was tracking its location through the “find my iPhone” app. The vehicle had been reported stolen out of Pawtucket.

Bemis observed the vehicle in question in the parking lot of the CVS at 2790 Post Road. Officers established a perimeter and canvassed for possible suspects. Shortly thereafter, a female suspect entered the vehicle and was taken into custody.

According to Bemis, the suspect at one point acknowledged to officers that she was in possession of illegal drugs. A Rhode Island State Police trooper responded to the scene to conduct a search of the suspect, the officer reports, and a substance believed to be crack cocaine was found on the suspect’s person. The substance – in a quantity of roughly one-tenth of a gram – was later confirmed to be crack cocaine through testing.

Shannon Nicole Godbout, 37, no address listed, was arrested on charges of possession of a stolen vehicle and possession of a controlled substance. She was transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing and later taken to Kent Hospital for treatment.

DUTY TO STOP

Just after 9:30 p.m. on March 25, Sgt. Gregory Johnson and Officer Paris Norwood responded to the Seasons Corner Market at 1190 Quaker Lane for a report of a hit-and-run incident.

At the scene, the reporting party and a male passenger in her vehicle told police that a man who appeared to be intoxicated had started yelling at a cashier in the store and engaging in “belligerent behavior.” Her male passenger told police he watched the situation and intervened after the belligerent man “began making offensive comments about Native Americans and Pilgrims.” At that point, the man approached the male passenger, “getting very close to him and began screaming at him,” according to Norwood’s report.

The reporting party then entered the store, at which point the belligerent man threatened to spit in her face, Norwood’s report reads.. He then left the store and entered a pickup truck, possibly a Ford Ranger. As the reporting party returned to her vehicle, a Volkswagen Passat, “the male abruptly put his vehicle in reverse and sped, at a high rate of speed, into [the reporting party’s] vehicle.” The pickup then sped away from the scene.

Norwood observed damaged to the Volkswagen consistent with the accounting of events provided by the reporting party and other witnesses. Two days later, police received security camera footage of the incident, and images of the suspect were circulated via social media in attempt to identify him.

Detective Christian Vargas reports receiving an anonymous tip on April 27 that allowed police to identify the suspect. After additional investigation, a warrant was issued for the man’s arrest on charges of disorderly conduct and duty to stop for an accident resulting in damage to an attended vehicle.

The Toyota’s operator said when she indicated she was going to contact police, the BMW’s operator fled south on Jefferson Boulevard on foot.

Shortly thereafter, another officer located the BMW’s operator on Jefferson Boulevard. The Toyota’s operator was taken to that location and “positively identified” the woman as the suspect, according to Fitzsimmons.

Fitzsimmons conducted a check of the area and located the vehicle parked in a lot at Imera Avenue and Fresno Road. “The vehicle now had the driver’s seat completely reclined with no head rest visible,” he reports.
