DUI
Around 12:45 a.m. on Sept. 13, Warwick Police Officer Bryan Araujo responded to a report of a vehicle facing the wrong way on the Interstate 95 North exit 24A off-ramp. He allegedly found the driver, identified as Kobby Har- vey Ewusi, 23, of 34 Flint St., Pawtucket, passed out at the wheel. He and West Warwick police officers were able to wake him up and remove him from the vehicle.
Police asked Ewusi to consent to a series of standardized field sobriety tests. Ewusi consented. Following the tests, he was arrested and charged with DUI of Liquor (BAC unknown) and cited for Refusal to Submit to a Chemical Test (first offense), Laned Roadway Violations and Driving the Wrong Way on a One Way Highway.
He was transported to Warwick Police Headquarters, where he was processed and secured in a cell.
SHOPLIFTING
Around 10:04 a.m. on Sept. 13, Warwick police responded to Walmart at 650 Bald Hill Road for the report of a shoplifting incident. Walmart Loss Prevention employees told police they had a man in custody for the allegedly “shoplifting Pokeman (sic) cards.”
Police identified the suspect as William Russo, 33, of 51 Crestview Drive, Portsmouth.
Store security accused Russo of concealing packs of cards in his shorts pockets; they valued the cards at $175.65 before tax.
Security watched Russo exit the store, allegedly without paying. He was confronted and escorted to the Loss Prevention Office.
The store told police they wanted to press charges. Russo was charged with shoplifting, a misdemeanor.
HIT & RUN
Around 7:12 p.m., Aug. 31, Warwick police responded to Gilbane and Meadow streets for the report of a motor vehicle crash with no injuries. A driver at the scene told police that the other driver fled the scene before police arrived.
The driver allegedly followed the other driver, honking her horn for him to pull over, which he eventually did. She called police and took note of the plate number, but while waiting for responding officers, the other driver (the vehicle’s lone occupant) fled.
Police searched for the vehicle but did not find it.
Police ran a check on the vehicle registration and found it was registered to Eduardo Gomez, 42, of 54 Riverdale St., Apt. 1, Providence.
Police say they linked Gomez to the vehicle that was involved in the crash. The other driver told police she wanted to “press charges for the hit and run on her vehicle.
Police filed a misdemeanor charge of Duty to Stop in Accident Involving Motor Vehicle and an arrest war- rant was issued. On Sept. 14, Gomez turned himself in at the Warwick Police Department lobby. He was booked and processed.
SHOPLIFTING
Around 5 p.m., Sept. 15, Warwick Police Officer Frank P. Matarese was at Tar- get, 1245 Bald Hill Road, speaking to a loss prevention officer, when he was informed that a man “had just passed all points of sale and exited the store with a shopping cart full of items,” according to the arrest report.
Police found the man al- legedly stuffing items from the cart into a van parked in the lot. Police detained the man and identified him as Matthew R. Bodick, 34, of 2 Hunters Crossing Drive, Coventry.
He showed police a receipt for $13.88, but according to police, the items in the cart totaled “well over $13.88.” Bodick allegedly paid for just three items. According to police, there were 31 items in the cart, valued at $768.12.
Target security told police the store wanted to press charges. He was charged with a misdemeanor shoplifting charge and held on an active bench warrant issued by 6th District Court. According to Warwick police, Bodick was involved in a similar incident at the store around 5:41 p.m. on Sept. 8.
Bodick was taken into custody and transported to the Rhode Island Department of Corrections Intake.
SIMPLE ASSAULT
At 4:50 a.m., Oct. 20, Cranston Police Officers arrested Frederick Monia-Matthews, 30, of 445 Pleasant St., South Weymouth, Massachusetts, on a charge of simple as- sault. The arrest was the result of a warrant pickup by Warwick police. Monia-Matthews was awaiting morning arraignment, according to Cranston police.
