The Warwick School Committee honored some of the city’s top sports programs of the fall season on Tuesday evening, recognizing the Division III State Champion Pilgrim football team, the RIPCOA State Champion Vets girls soccer team, as well as the Vets boys soccer team.

The Pilgrim football team had arguably its best season in school history in 2019. On top of its state title victory over Tolman, its first in 44 years, the team also had seven players named All-Division, 11 named to the All-Academic team, and head coach Blake Simpson was named the Division III Coach of the Year. The Patriots capped off their undefeated campaign with a 49-0 Beacon Bowl win over rival Toll Gate on Thanksgiving.

The Vets girls soccer team finished the regular season with a 13-0-1 record and rolled through the playoffs to wrap up its second championship in three years with a thrilling, overtime win in the title game against Curtis Corner.

“This team of 28 young ladies exemplified what it means to be a student-athlete. They were not only successful on the field, but are equally successful off the field in the classroom,” said Warwick Athletic Director Ken Rix. “This team has embraced what it means to be a team and through the leadership of the graduating eighth graders that exemplified grace, sportsmanship, leadership and determination.”

Each player was presented a certificate of achievement on Tuesday evening, which was given to them individually by Warwick School Committee Chairwoman Karen Bachus.
