By ALEX SPONSELLER The Warwick Continental American All-Star teams have impressed so far in the District 3 tournaments, with all three units still standing as of Wednesday morning.

The WCA 12’s will be competing in the district championship on Saturday evening against either South Kingstown or Chariho, while the 11’s competed in the district finals on Wednesday evening.

The 10’s were also in action on Wednesday night, competing in the losers’ bracket finals against Narragansett, with a win sending them to Friday’s title game against South Kingstown.

The WCA 12’s have had some tough battles in the tournament but managed to pull off wins over Westerly, Chariho and South Kingstown. The combined scores were 10-8 in WCA’s favor.

The WCA’s 10’s opened with a 2-1 victory on North Kingstown, but fell to South Kingstown 9-7 to fall into the losers’ bracket. They have been on a tear since, picking up a 15-0 win over Warwick North and a 12-2 decision over East Greenwich.

The 11’s picked up wins over Warwick North and North Kingstown to qualify for the district championship. WCA 11’s coach Mario Cerullo has been pleased with the team’s performance and its ability to gel right off the bat.

“It’s surprising to see how well the kids are coming together. Some of these kids play in different leagues, we’ve had a few kids come from West Warwick since they don’t have a league and they have meshed really well,” said Cerullo.

Defense has been key for the 11’s, and Cerullo hopes that the team’s bats get hot and pitching stays consistent down the stretch.

“Defense has been what we’ve done best, but our hitting has been well also. We can do a little bit better offensively, producing earlier with some of the key hitters in our lineup, but defensively over two games, we’ve only made two errors. Our defense has been keeping us in games and when our offense gets rolling we have been able to put up some points on the board,” said Cerullo. “We just need to pitch well and put up runs early to try to put them away. Once we get a lead, we can’t sit back, we have to stay on top of them.”

Colin Freitas took the ball for WCA against North and finished with seven strikeouts and no earned runs. He also added two hits and two RBI in the win, while Jackson Field and Mario Cerullo each added two hits as well. Kenny George also had a hit.

Ryan Gee came on in relief and escaped a bases-loaded, no-out jam by striking out three straight batters.

George took the mound against North Kingstown and finished with three strikeouts.

Freitas went 2-for-3 at the plate with three RBI while Fields went 2-for-2 with two runs scored. Cerullo also added two RBI while Brayden Randall scored a pair of runs.
