By ALEX SPONSELLER The Warwick FireFighters Soccer Club recently unveiled its annual scholarship award winners. The recipients included Megan Gomes (Nova Southeastern University), Hailey Clark (University of New Haven), Luke Gibeau (New England Institute of Technology) and Joshua Costello (URI).
These $500 scholarships are given to longtime members of WFFSC, and are rewarded by WFFSC as well as the Gianna Cirella and Elanna Zuller Memorial Funds.
“I felt extremely honored to receive this scholarship. I have been a part of Warwick FireFighters for the last six years and have worked extremely hard during every game and practice. Earning this scholarship shows me that they noticed all my hard work,” said Costello.
Costello added: “WFFSC has meant so much to me. When I was 12 years old, the coaches and players welcomed me with open arms. I made lifelong friendships not only with my teammates, but with my coaches as well. We're all like one big family and we had so much fun, especially at the Memorial weekend tournaments in New Hampshire. My coaches and teammates helped me excel my soccer skills and be the dedicated player I was, but more importantly, they showed me how to be a respectful young man and show good sportsmanship no matter what.”
Costello will be majoring in kinesiology at URI and hopes to walk on the soccer team.
Gibeau hopes to be an electrician in the future and plans on always being involved in the sport.
“I was grateful that they recognized me. (WFFSC) has been a huge part of my life, most of my closest friends are people I've met through the league and they are people that I hope will be in my life forever. I will be attending NEIT so that I can become an electrician. I think soccer will always be a part of my life whether it be in a recreational or competitive way.”
