To the Editor:

I was glad to see in the Feb. 4 article “First of new streetlights to shine soon” that this big improvement to both efficiency and safety is just around the corner. Be that as it may, one thing that seems to be continually hinted at but glossed over is an explanation of how the “red capped” (intentionally turned-off) streetlights are going to be handled during the fixture conversion.

While I know there are some which are turned off due to light pollution or nuisance outweighing the safety benefit, there are also many which I’ve been told are turned off for cost cutting or energy saving purposes. One of these is on a particularly narrow and dangerous section of Sand Pond Road, which runs behind my house on Pilgrim Drive.

Noting the striking reduction in power usage with LEDs, I have to imagine that the energy savings of the conversion would more than cover the cost of “re-lighting” these cost curtailed fixtures, but it would be good to have this confirmed or know that it is being considered. At best the fixtures may be replaced but left unlit, or in the worst case overlooked entirely and not even replaced. It seems now would be the time to sort this, if it hasn’t been sorted already.

Did you ask our new mayor's office? I bet they be responsive.
