To the Editor:

OK, being housebound is not the best means of maintaining sanity. And a number of the neighbors may well be aghast at the suggestion, but the suggestion, however insane, needs to be made.

I am sick and tired of writing Meshanticut Valley Parkway on everything calling for an address. I am tired of telling people how to pronounce Meshanticut and even more tired of spelling it for them – often multiple times.

And I do not understand why Meshanticut Valley Parkway has that name. The road is on a hill, not in a valley. The road does not terminate in Meshanticut Valley down by Meshanticut Lake. It does, however, go straight across Dean Estates.

On the other hand, Dean Parkway does lead into Meshanticut Valley and the lake. And it skirts Dean Estates. No one gets tired of writing “Dean Parkway” or helping others pronounce or spell “Dean.” Of course, that may be because no one has a Dean Parkway address – but it is a lot easier to pronounce and spell.

Switching names between the two parkways would be an immediate hassle. Everyone would have to fill out all those change of address forms. But think, it would be the last of writing Meshanticut and the new address would be so simple – Dean.

Well, so much for this form of staying in and staying amused. Have to look for something else.
