When small makes it big

Occupying most of the activity rooms at the Crowne Plaza there was nothing small about the Small Business Saturday sponsored by the Rhode Island Disabilities Council. The sixth annual event hosted 157 small businesses of which 32 are owned by entrepreneurs with disabilities and 13 by veterans said event co-chair Sue Babin. She said the event attracted 3,500 people. She explained the purpose of the event was not to raise money for the council but to celebrate the entrepreneurship and success of people with disabilities and to showcase small businesses. Vendors were charged a modest fee that helped cover costs. According to its website, the council “believes that people with developmental disabilities should fully participate in community life. Men, women, and children should be able to enjoy family life. Children and adolescents should go to school. Adults should work. All should have decent homes, have friends, and live as independently as possible.” (Warwick Beacon photos)
