When Warwick Neck School teachers Cathy Maguire and Dana Scolano thought of recognizing Alan Shawn Feinstein the philanthropist who initiated the program that focuses on students doing good deeds and provides school funding, they planned a tree planting ceremony. The event grew from there, taking an unanticipated twist that had Feinstein’s wife, daughter and grandchildren visiting the school. When Feinstein learned of the honor he requested the tree, a weeping spruce, be in memorial of his son, Ari Jason Feinstein, CEO of the Feinstein Foundation, who died Nov. 8. Feinstein was unable to be present for the ceremony held Friday morning outside the school. Principal Frank Galligan spoke of the enduring message the tree would bring, a reminder of what the Feinstein Foundation has done for the school. Leila Feinstein, Ari’s sister, lauded the students for their patience and behavior in the chilly conditions. Students Eva Lesuer and Alex Gemma helped plant the tree. A plaque commemorating the occasion and the life of Ari Jason Feinstein will be mounted at the school. (Text and photos by John Howell)
