To the Editor,
I am writing to congratulate Winman Middle School student, Harry Fallon, for winning the VFW essay contest, "What makes a good American." Although I did not get to read his essay, I heard about it from a veteran friend.
As a psych nurse who understands the special needs of Veterans, as well as a part-time school nurse who encourages children to reach their full potential, I was so happy to learn that Rhode Island kids take part in this "Patriot's Pen" essay run by the VFW each year for adolescents. That is a great civic activity and a wonderful bridge between generations.
But to find out that one of our very own local kids could become one of just 53 finalists in the world? Incredible. I hope Harry can make it through the next rounds to win a trip to Washington, DC.

Hopkins is a candidate for House Dist. 21
