The Norwood branch’s Boys and Girls Clubs of Warwick on Frederick St. is surely spreading holiday cheer, as the staff is diligently gathering toys and other items for parents to give their children. With donations from the police department, school department, Providence Journal Charitable Foundation, Bank Newport and many others, the club has filled two holiday rooms (one room for younger children and other for teens) with dolls, toy cars, electronics and more. This gift-giving tradition started 18 years ago when Lara D’Antuono, the executive director of the club, was picking out presents for her newborn daughter, Bianca. She realized that some people didn’t have the opportunity of giving gifts and wanted to make presents more accessible – they’re free. “Because of this, there will be so many smiles Christmas morning… hundreds of kids smiling from the donations,” said D’Antuono. This year, the Boys and Girls Club expects to receive a couple hundred parents for this holiday event. Shopping at the Boys and Girls Club continues today, and parents can select a time to stop by – you do not have to be a member of the club to shop there. Call 467-4385.
