Defacing or vandalizing cemeteries is deplorable. Sensible judges who impose common-sense sentencing (usually in other states, since RI is all about the fines) will often sentence the vandal to community service, working on crews which repair the stones and clean up the grounds.
I'm sure the restoration crews would appreciate the help and the vandal may learn something, as well.
