I had the opportunity a few years ago to spend the day with a police officer manning a speed trap (my words not his) and learned something interesting.

Standing still and watching a car pass by at 70 MPH it is almost impossible to get a look at the driver of a car. In talking with the police officer he indicated he typically has no idea the race or gender of a person he has pulled over until he is standing at their window.
