The citizens of most cities and towns are woefully disengaged until their taxes skyrocket or sports are threatened or some other calamity occurs. The school committee system is something that needs to go. They have never been able to properly manage the schools, showing fiscal ignorance or abandon. When the tax payers realize that almost 6 out of 10 dollars go to the schools, perhaps things will change. When your taxes go up 1000.00 a year, 600.00 of that is for a school system that fails to learn math.
