Don't we already have fines for discarding trash on the beach? It's called littering. But this is not about littering. Rather, it's about Sen. Lynch's desire to expand her Nanny State by delivering an "underlying message" that she, and only she knows best. As someone who spends time each week picking up trash on beaches, allow me to inform the senator that discarded water bottles, beer cans, and Dunkin coffee containers are a far bigger problem than cigarette butts. Since heart disease is a far bigger public health problem than cigarette butts, perhaps Ms. Lynch should propose legislation that fines people for being obese. Fines would be between $150 and $1,000 for a first offense, between $500 and $1,000 for a second conviction and between $750 and $1,000 for subsequent offenses
