Providence College’s Department of Theatre, Dance and Film presents Playhouse Creatures, by April DeAngelis, directed by John Garrity (The Good Doctor, Poor Murderer). Scenic design is by Trevor Elliott (The Addams Family), who is also the designer in residence at 2nd Story Theatre in Warren. Lighting designs are provided by Jen Rock (The Addams Family, These Shining Lives, Blithe Spirit) accompanied with sound designs by David Rabinow (These Shining Lives), teaching artist at The Sandra Feinstein- Gamm Theatre. Amanda Carney Downing (Lysistrata, Curtains), costume shop director at Trinity Repertory Company, is the costume designer along with wig and hair designer Michael Dates (Blithe Spirit, The Addams Family). Voice and accent coaching is provided by Megan Chang (Blithe Spirit, The Addams Family).

This bawdy, touching play examines the lives of five women seeking to make art or, in some cases, just make a living as the first actresses allowed on stage during the English Restoration. While exploring the camaraderie and competition between some of the most famous female players of the 17th century, the play glimpses into an era in which actresses were a novelty both admired and exploited by a patriarchal society and draws some surprising parallels to our own contemporary entertainment industry.
