Better access to Rocky Point needed

Posted

To the Editor:

I recently had written a letter to both the mayor’s office in Warwick and the Department of Environmental Management (DEM) office in Providence concerning public vehicle access into Rocky Point. DEM Deputy Director Lisa Primiano answered my letter and assured me that the DEM and the mayor’s office are working hand in hand to provide easier public access.

As of this letter, I can say firsthand that the walk from the parking area to the shoreline carrying fishing gear, chairs or picnic items is quite a trek. And in the heat of the summer, it’s even worse, especially for those who are elderly and not in the best of health.

Until they can make this easier for the public to access with vehicles, my short-term suggestion would then be a shuttle service in and out of the park and shoreline area. They would pick up the people in the parking lot area and take them to the shoreline area dropping them off at different locations within the park grounds. The shuttle vehicle would have to have the back of the vehicle as a cargo hole holding the things the people are taking down to the park. At first blush, this may seem like a lot, but it certainly would solve the problem for the time being since the work needed to have full publics access in and out may take some time.

I am sure between both the DEM and the mayor’s office such a vehicle could be bought for next to nothing, used of course. And if money becomes the issue, I am sure people using this shuttle service would not mind paying a quarter or two for a round trip ride.

Rocky Point was enjoyed by many over the years and it’s really a beautiful area for people to sit by the shore, fish and have picnics. Maybe once fully opened, a chowder and clam shack could be opened so people could get a bite to eat, but for now, the shuttle service seems like the logical solution to the problem at hand.

Rocky Point left a lot of people with good memories and a lot of people once again would like to visit the area. Every once in a while, call the mayor’s office or the DEM office and ask how are you making out with the Rocky Point access problem. It’s just too nice of a place to forget.

Tom, a quarter a trip? What century were you born in? Why should Warwick bear the burden of this cost for a person from Pascoag?

Tom, if we had a bus to take you from the parking lot to the beach, you would get on the front of the bus, walk to the back, and get out, because you'd already be there! It's that close. But you're right, there's work to be done before they can open the park completely. That little parking lot at the entrance won't do, when it's ready to open again. As one of the neighbors, I think what they need to consider is a means of getting to Rocky Point that doesn't involve driving through the residential areas surrounding the park. Back when, you could get there by train, which would be great, if there was a way to bring it back. Even better might be arranging to travel there by boat. But if you're unable to navigate the few hundred feet from parking lot to shoreline, let me know next time you're planning to go fishing. I'll come over and help you carry in your equipment.
