The local Panera Bread continues their charitable work for B’s Mobility Ride with a Buddies Summer Reading Series as part of their “Raise the Dough” campaign for the McDermott Family.
The next book reading will be Tuesday, July 14.
Benjamin McDermott, 8, has spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), a type of muscular dystrophy.
Therefore, he must use a wheelchair, and the family is hoping to purchase a wheelchair accessible van by the end of the year so Benjamin has the freedom of mobility, hence B’s Mobility Ride.
Panera has been working with the McDermott’s since January and through all their fundraisers and partnership with a local radio show “Reading with Robin,” has raised over $20,000 toward the over $60,000 goal.
The reading series is co-sponsored by “Reading with Robin” and will have Benjamin discussing some of his favorite titles, such as “Follow My Leader” by James B. Garfield, “Alien in my Pocket: Blast off” by Nate Ball and “Captain Nobody” by Dean Pitchfork.
Local authors, such as Kevin Mulhern, author of “Cody the Cloud,” and Mary Jane Begin, author of “My Little Pony Under the Sparking Sea,” will also host meet and greets and there will be product sampling, cookie decorating, and even “swag bags” at the events.
Panera has already hosted several successful fundraisers and Wendy Kopp, director of marketing for Panera Bread/Howley Bread Group, said, “We anticipate more fun at our two upcoming summer reading events, so we hope to see the community at the cafe enjoying a good book for a great cause.”
The Buddies Summer Reading Series will take place on Tuesdays, July 14 and 28, as well as Aug. 18, from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at the Warwick Panera Bread at 1000 Bald Hill Road.
A $20 donation is asked for and all proceeds will go to B’s Mobility Ride.
People are asked to RSVP for the events at www.benjaminsbookbuddiesbenjaminmcdermott.eventbrite.com for the event on the 14th, www.benjaminsbookbuddieskevinmulhern.eventbrite.com for the event on July 28, and www.benjaminsbookbuddiesmaryjanebegin.eventbrite.com for Aug. 18.
