Tri-City Elks

Annual Fishing Derby for boys and girls ages 5-12 April 23 at 7 a.m. Stop in at the Lodge to sign up your kids. There will be two age groups, 5-8 and 9-12. One child from each age group will win a new fishing pole for catching the largest fish. Fish weigh-in will take place at 11 a.m.  Hot dogs & chips will be available after the weigh-in.

Roger Ceresi & The All Starz “Spring Bash” April 30 from 8-11:15 p.m. Tickets are $12 per person in advance/at door. Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are available in the lounge during regular business hours. The lodge opens Monday through Thursday at 3 p.m. and Friday through Sunday at 12 noon.  

Zumba lessons continue every Tuesday from 6-7 p.m. Lorraine Blanchard is the instructor. Come and burn some calories and enjoy the fun. Cost is $6 per person.

Ocean State Toastmasters Meeting

Ocean State Toastmasters will hold its next meeting April 19 from 7-9 p.m. at Warwick City Hall, 3275 Post Road. Regular meetings are held on the first and third Tuesdays of each month. The club is one 13,500 in Toastmasters International, a nonprofit, educational organization devoted to the development of public speaking and leadership skills. Meet the Mayor at Norwood Association

The Norwood Neighborhood Association will hold a meeting April 20 at 7 p.m. at the Norwood Boys & Girls Club, 43 Frederick Street. A Norwood Crime Update Report will be presented by a community police officer followed by guest speaker Mayor Scott Avedisian, who will present an update on Warwick and state activity. Refreshments and snacks will be served. Everyone welcome.

Healing with Reiki and Reflexology

Friends of the Warwick Animal Shelter

The monthly meeting for Friends of the Warwick Animal Shelter will be held April 21 at the Pilgrim Senior Center, 27 Pilgrim Parkway (behind Benny’s on Warwick Avenue and near Pilgrim High School) at 6:30 p.m. They will be finalizing plans for the upcoming Crafting for Critters on May 7. New England Square and Round Dance Convention

The 58th New England Square and Round Dance Convention will be held April 22 and 23 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, 800 Greenwich Ave., from 10 a.m.-11 p.m. featuring a live band on Saturday evening from 8 a.m.-11 p.m. They are expecting 600 dancers from New England, New York and New Jersey. Buckeye Brook Earth Day Cleanup

The 19th Annual Buckeye Brook Coalition Earth Day Cleanup will be held April 23 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. The rain date is April 24. Registration starts at 8:45 a.m. at Knights of Columbus Hall lower parking area located at 475 Sandy Lane in Warwick. Volunteers will be divided into groups led by team leaders to a number of sites throughout the Buckeye Brook watershed. The object of the cleanup is to remove litter from environmentally sensitive areas. Cleanup supplies will be provided. Dress appropriately for wet or woodland areas. Cleanup will end at noon. Earth Awareness Day

Seasons of New England, located at 479 Warwick Ave., is hosting a free public informational event April 23 from 10 a.m-2 p.m. Represented at the event will be the URI Cooperative Extension-Master Gardener Program, RI Natural History Survey-Rhody Native initiative, Save the Bay, RI Resource Recovery Corporation, the RI Energy Challenge and the St. Peter School WAG program. The topics covered include nurturing the soil and composting, water and energy conservation, landscaping “locally”, recycling and more. A special presentation will be given at 11 a.m. by URI Master Gardener Reinhard Sidor on composting yard and garden debris.  With degrees in chemistry and environmental health, Mr. Sidor specializes in the areas of composting, landscape management and fruit growing. New England Amputee Association Group Meeting

The New England Amputee Association Group Meeting is holding its next meeting April 27 from 4:15-6 p.m. for a very informative presentation by Jonathan Teoli CPO LPO of Rhode Island Limb Co. Jonathan will to be discussing prosthetic  liner and sleeve care as well as ways to combat sweating and skin issues that tend to arise as the weather gets warmer. The meeting will be held at Kent Hospital Outpatient Rehabilitation Services , 1351 South County Trail in East Greenwich in Building 2, Suite 200. Social & Economic Justice Book Group

The Warwick Progressive Democrats will be having a book discussion April 28 at 6 p.m. in the small room at the Warwick Public Library. The book for conversation is Shock Doctrine by Naomi Klein. Everyone is welcome to attend. This book can be checked out from the Reference Desk at the main Warwick library. This group usually meets every fourth Thursday of the month.

Craft Fair

This year my craft fair will be held at the Coventry Community Center. The fair will be on April 30 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m., located at Paine Field on Route 117 in Coventry. Table will be $25 but you have to supply your own. The event will be held indoors and outdoors (first come, first serve for indoors). Food available. Catholic Elementary School Scholarships

The Knights of Columbus Warwick Council #2295 is offering $500 Catholic elementary school scholarships to three students in each of the three Catholic elementary schools in Warwick (St. Kevin’s, St. Rose of Lima and St. Peter’s). Scholarship awards for the 2016-17 academic year will be awarded for a one-year term, and children will need to reapply each year if they wish to continue receiving the awards. You can obtain applications from your school’s main office or through www.warwickcouncil2295.org. Applications must be completed and returned to your school by May 16.

Stop, Drop & Bowl For Burns

The Providence Firefighters Burn Foundation 501(c)(3) will be hosting their 2nd annual Bowling Tournament May 22 at Lang’s Bowlarama in Cranston. The cost to participate in the event is $35, which includes shoe rental, three games of bowling, a t-shirt and two drink tickets. Also, they will be having raffles and silent auctions. All proceeds raised at this event will benefit the local Arthur C. Luf’s Children’s Burn Camp. Teams of six are preferred. Come out and support a great cause while having fun. Old Warwick Grange #41

The Grange is a fraternal non-profit organization with a special interest in community service. Their history is as an agricultural organization and the traditions of faith, patriotism, leadership and family values. Family Performance Series

All in a Chord

All in a Chord (AIAC), the barbershop chorus of women from all over Rhode Island, is seeking to recruit women 18 years old and older who love to sing. Unlike some choruses, AIAC does not do competition, or buy expensive costumes. There are low monthly dues to meet expenses. AIAC is a friendly group of 25 women that loves to sing and entertain. AIAC sings at social events, senior centers, libraries, birthday parties, PawSox games, etc. Members do not need to know how to read music, but only be able to carry a tune on key. Moms for Moms

Support a new mother, share your experience and make a new friend. You can make a difference with just one hour a week. Moms for Moms/Families First RI helps pregnant women and new mothers deal with an enormous transition by matching them with trained volunteers who are mothers themselves. The program provides emotional and social support and strives to connect new moms to resources within their own communities. Mentors develop a warm, supportive relationship while spending time with the new mom in their homes, accompanying them on outings and attending mom gatherings. Aphasia Conversation Group

On the second Tuesday of each month from 6-7:30 p.m., Sargent Rehabilitation Center, 800 Quaker Lane, Warwick, holds an aphasia conversation group. This group provides a supportive meeting place for people with aphasia to socialize and share their communication challenges and strategies. There is no charge for participation. Join the Pawtuxet Rangers Fife & Drum Corps of Warwick and continue the great tradition of Colonial/Revolutionary history through music. Bonniedale Farm in North Scituate offers dog and cat food at no cost to struggling pet owners, hoping to provide for the animals while easing the burden on community members facing tough times. Fife and Drum Corps

The Kentish Guards Fife and Drum Corps rehearses on Wednesday evenings from 7-9 p.m. at the Kentish Guards Armory on Pierce St. in East Greenwich. Free lessons on playing the fife are provided to men and young men interested in joining the corps.

Grief Support

Evening Counseling Available

If you are experiencing depression, anxiety or overwhelming stress coupled with an addiction to or dependence on drugs or alcohol, then The Kent Center’s new evening program may be right for you. The Kent Center is offering an intensive outpatient program for people battling co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders Program hours are 4:40-8 p.m., making it accessible for people who work. Help for Victims of Crime

Are you a victim of physical or sexual assault, domestic violence, untreated childhood abuse, or another crime or traumatic event? Are you experiencing depression, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, increased substance use or other emotional difficulties? Volunteers Needed to Sew

Looking for something to do to help foster kids? Organizers of The Sewing Project to Help Foster Kids are looking for volunteers who want to help sew pillowcase or duffel bags for foster children. Currently their belongings are sometimes put in black trash bags. Foster parent Adriane Grimaldi in Scottsdale, Ariz. started the Sewing Project in February 2008 for children taken from their homes by Child Protective Services (CPS) to make kid-friendly bags for carrying their belongings instead of trash bags. To date, people have made 6,700 pillowcase bags for foster kids Pillowcase bags are delivered to CPS to use instead of trash bags. The Sewing Project has opened a new Rhode Island Chapter working with the Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF) and is in need of volunteers to sew. Cornerstone Church

Domestic Abuse Support Groups

The Elizabeth Buffum Chace Center is a non-profit agency providing services to victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault. The agency offers morning and evening support groups for adults dealing with current or past domestic abuse Groups provide a safe place to talk with others who have shared similar experiences. The groups are confidential and free of charge. For more information call Jessica at 738-1700. 

Free Health Care

Our Lady of Fatima Hospital has an outreach coordinator to assist women in getting free health care If you are between the ages of 40-64 and are underserved or uninsured, call Maria at 456-3105 for a confidential assessment. You may be eligible for free care including mammogram and gynecological care.

Developmental Screening 

The Child Outreach Department of the Warwick Public Schools, in cooperation with the Volunteers of Warwick schools (VOWS), conducts regular preschool screening clinics. All Warwick preschool children between the ages of 3 and 5 are offered the Early Screening Inventory-Revised (ESI-R). This is a free service provided by the Warwick Public Schools. Participation in a Developmental Screening is a long established program of the Warwick School Department that provides families with information about their child’s development and offers information about community resources. For more information, or to arrange a clinic appointment for your preschool aged child, call the VOWS office at 734-3230.
