CCAP celebrates 50 years and Avedisian’s birthday

The Comprehensive Community Action Program (CCAP) wasn’t the only one to receive recognition for turning 50 this year at the 50th Anniversary Community Awards dinner Thursday night.

Staff, administration and sponsors of CCAP gathered at Harbor Lights Marina and Country Club last week to celebrate CCAP’s 50th anniversary and raised more than $55,000 for the organization.

Mayor Scott Avedisian was honored for his longstanding partnership with CCAP and noted that he also turned 50 this year.

“Everyone at CCAP works with such class and dignity and it just warms this city,” he said. “If I have to grow old, I’m doing it with really good company.”

Joanne McGunagle, executive director of CCAP, had a few surprises for the mayor to celebrate his birthday: a basket full of other things that also turned 50 this year.

In the basket was a copy of the movies “Sound of Music” and “A Charlie Brown Christmas.”

The Canadian flag also turned 50, so Avedisian got a miniature American flag with maple leaf memorabilia. The soap opera “Days of Our Lives” also turned 50, but when McGunagle couldn’t find an hourglass she got him an egg timer.

For the 50th anniversary of the Pillsbury Doughboy, the mayor received a pair of boxers with the classic pastry character.

“The mayor knows what his residents need and he foes the extra mile to see it done,” McGunagle said.

At the end of the event a cake was brought out for Avedisian and CCAP.
