Donald Gothberg and Clarice Barth met at the age of 14 when they were in high school in Spokane, Washington. They married on Feb. 15, 1951 and on Feb. 28 the extended Gothberg family came together to celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary. From Spokane, the young couple moved east to Ohio before Donald’s work as a pipe fitter brought the family to Warwick. At the time, a refinery was in the planning stages to be built in Jamestown. That, as we know today, never happened and Donald landed a job at Electric Boat, where he worked until retiring. Meanwhile, Clarice became active in the community, going on to become the director of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) run by Westbay Community Action. She served as president of the Rhode Island Mental Association and serves today as the associate pastor at Open Table of Christ Church in Washington Park. The Gothbergs are the parents of six sons and one daughter and have 18 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. A surprise celebration was held Feb. 28 at Chianti’s in Potowomut.
