o, you were wondering whether the state is watching you from the newly installed devices on Airport Road traffic signals and might even issue a ticket should you run a stoplight? That’s not the case. Charles St. Martin of the Department of Transportation reports the devices aren’t conventional cameras, but rather thermal detectors that are part of a $1.3 million pilot program designed to maximize traffic flow on the road with an average of 33,000 vehicular trips daily. The “adoptive signal intersections” program incorporates eight intersections along the road. It is expected to become operational this summer. As St. Martin explained it, the system detects traffic during the day and night, feeding that information into a computer that can alter the timing on signals so as to minimize congestion. He said 80 percent of the system is covered by a Federal Highway Administration grant with the balance being picked up by the DOT. He said the Rhode Island Airport Corporation is a partner in the program.

Hopefully, it will work as well as the traffic flow devices on Route 2.
