Fung campaign hires consulting firm with ties to Romney, Brown

Cranston Mayor Allan Fung’s campaign on Tuesday announced the selection of the Shawmut Group – which includes veterans of Mitt Romney’s administration in Massachusetts and presidential bid – as its general consultant in the race for governor.

“I’m very excited to welcome the Shawmut Group to the Fung for Governor Team,” said Fung in a statement. “As veterans of the Massachusetts State House, and with experience running statewide and national campaigns, the members of the Shawmut Group will provide valuable insight and strategic direction to our campaign. They know how state government works, they have experience in New England politics, and they know how to communicate my plans and policies to revitalize the Rhode Island economy and put more people to work.”

The Shawmut Group includes many notable former Romney staffers, including Beth Myers, who served as the 2012 Republican presidential nominee’s chief of staff and campaign manager and led the vice presidential vetting process that resulted in U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan’s selection.

Shawmut’s leadership team also includes Eric Fehrnstrom, former Romney communications director, and Peter Flaherty, who served as deputy chief of staff and deputy campaign manager.

The Fung campaign’s statement additionally touts the Shawmut Group’s “instrumental” role in Scott Brown’s victory in the 2010 U.S. Senate race in Massachusetts.

Fung served as a delegate for Romney at the 2012 Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla. He is running against Ken Block for the Republican nomination for governor.
