Gas prices down another 3 cents, survey shows

The price of gasoline in Rhode Island has fallen another 3 cents this week, the eighth straight week of decreases, according to AAA Northeast. Prices have fallen 20 cents over those eight weeks.

AAA’s Jan. 25 survey of prices in Rhode Island finds self-serve, regular unleaded averaging $1.91 per gallon, 3 cents lower than last week. Rhode Island’s price is 8 cents above the national average for regular unleaded of $1.83. A year ago at this time, the average price in Rhode Island was 19 cents higher at $2.10.

“Just 10 days ago, crude oil closed at its lowest point in 12 years,” said Lloyd Albert, AAA Northeast senior vice president of public and government affairs. “Globally, there’s plenty of oil, and not enough demand. These factors are all major contributors to plunging prices at the pump.”

The range in prices in the latest AAA survey for unleaded regular is 28 cents, from a low of $1.71 to a high of $1.99. AAA advises motorists to shop around for the best prices in their area, and to make sure they and their passengers buckle up – every time.
