The Toll Gate girls’ basketball team upped its win total from three to nine this season thanks in large part to the play of sophomore Hannah McNulty.
McNulty’s primary sport is soccer, but there was no one better in the city of Warwick on the court this winter.
“Her No. 1 sport is soccer, but she’s come a long way in basketball,” Toll Gate head coach John Paolino said. “She’s just a competitor and plays intensely no matter what the sport is.”
McNulty was a double-double machine this season, serving as a presence in the paint and on the offensive and defensive glass.
Among the three schools in Warwick, she averaged over four points more per game than any other player in the city.
McNulty averaged 15 points per game, while Warwick Vets point guard Kat Raposo was second with 10.8 per game.
“Hannah progressed and became more valuable for us this season,” Paolino said. “The more reps she got, the more confident she got. Her athleticism and work ethic were tremendous. Down the stretch, she was really able to put the ball in the basket consistently and rack up double-doubles.”
According to Paolino, the Titans had some outstanding senior leadership this season, but there’s no question that McNulty was a leader on the team as just a sophomore.
Teammates of McNulty’s looked up to her because of her play on the court as she let her play do the talking.
“We had some great leadership from our senior captain Holly Gerber-George, but Hannah really served as our unofficial co-captain,” Paolino said.
The nine-win season for Toll Gate was its best in a long time as the program has seen its fair share of struggles in recent years.
Furthermore, the Titans made the playoffs and upset Classical, 61-43, behind a game-high 32 points from McNulty.
The win gave Toll Gate its first playoff win since 2005.
It will look to build off of that in what it hopes will be an even more successful season next winter.
Just how far the Titans can go next season may lie in the hands of McNulty.
